BOSTON – Unable to convert on a couple of early quality chances, the Boston University men's soccer team could not overcome a 25th-minute goal and ultimately fell, 1-0, to Harvard on a rainy Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.

With their eight-game home unbeaten streak dating back to last season snapped, the Terriers fall to 2-3-6, while the Crimson improve to 5-4-1. BU finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots but none of its attempts forced Cullen MacNeil to make a save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Two minutes into the game, after receiving a service pass into the box from sophomore Brian Hernandez, junior Aidan Bone found on the right side senior Quinn Matulis, who had a look at net from an angle but sent the eight-yard shot wide right.
The Terriers forced a turnover following a Harvard throw-in and pushed the ball past midfield. Hernandez pounced on it and quickly took a 40-yard shot that rolled inches wide left of the post of an empty net, as MacNeil rushed up the field off his line in an attempt to clear the ball.
Both Matulis (20:39) and Hernandez (22:48) later went wide again.
Harvard scored on its first attempt when Ale Gutierrez fired an 18-yard shot at the left post following a service pass up the field from Kaoru Fujiwara.
Junior Andrew Rent nearly tapped a cross inside the near post three minutes into the second half, but a Crimson defender blocked the attempt and the backline cleared the ensuing corner.
Senior Colin Innes' shot attempt was blocked at 74:51, and his corner kick was cleared seconds later.
Trying to find the equalizer, BU sent a long cross in the final seconds toward the box but just missed on the connection for the shutout loss.

GAME NOTES

Hernandez, Matulis and Rent all finished with two shots apiece.
Senior Francesco Montali earned two saves.
BU finished with a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Terriers' eight-game home unbeaten streak was the program's longest since 2014.
Harvard snapped a three-game losing streak at Nickerson Field to the Terriers to improve to 28-17-8 all-time in the series that dates back to 1951.

UP NEXT

BU will remain home and resume conference play by hosting Bucknell on Saturday (Oct. 8) at 2 p.m.
The matchup is part of Soc'toberFest, which will feature food trucks, cider donuts, ears of corn and a 21+ beer garden.
The Terriers will also honor the 35-year head coaching career of Neil Roberts (1984-2019) at halftime.
