Terriers Fall to Yale on the Road, 58-46

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Alex Giannaros scored 12 points on 60 percent shooting, and senior Sydney Johnson added 10 points, but the Boston University women's basketball program dropped a 58-46 decision to Yale on Tuesday afternoon at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
After both teams combined to shoot just 14-for-55 (25.4 percent) in the first half, the Bulldogs (6-6) outscored the Terriers (5-5) 21-12 in the third quarter. Yale led by as many as 16 points, holding BU to season-lows in points scored and three-point shooting.
Senior Maren Durant collected seven points, eight rebounds, and two blocks, while classmate Maggie Pina chipped in with seven points and five boards.
Jenna Clark paced all student-athletes with 15 points and seven assists, while Haley Sabol and Kiley Capstraw posted 14 and 12 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU was held without a field goal for the first 5:30 of the game, as Yale executed a 9-0 run to go up 11-1.
- Giannaros canned a three from the right corner, then Shean collected a loose ball and drew contact on a made layup for a nostalgic three-point play at the 4:05 mark to cut into the deficit.
- Yale led 16-10 after one quarter, but the Terriers knocked down a pair of triples from Pina and Giannaros to tie the game 2:31 into the second.
- BU held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first 4:32 of the second, but Yale responded by keeping the Terriers away from the net for a span of over five minutes.
- Clark nailed a runner from the beyond the arc as the buzzer sounded to give Yale a 25-22 advantage at halftime.
- That three ignited an extended 11-2 Yale run capped with Capstraw's three with 6:48 on the clock to make it 33-24 Bulldogs.
- Johnson and Crispe teamed up for six consecutive points to get the Terriers within three, 33-30.
- After Crispe found Durant underneath to close BU's gap to 36-32, the Bulldogs rattled off a 10-2 burst, with five points coming from Avery Lee, to make it 46-34 entering the fourth quarter.
- Johnson opened the final frame with a driving layup, but Yale countered with six consecutive points to go ahead 52-36 with 5:40 remaining, its largest advantage of the contest.
- Giannaros and Pina combined for a pair of layups, then Johnson drained two consecutive buckets as part of an 8-0 Terrier run in a 1:50 span, whittling the gap down to 52-44.
- BU was limited to just one field in the final three minutes, however, a Pina layup off a feed from Giannaros with 22 seconds to go to seal the final score.
STATS
- The Terriers shot 32.7 percent from the field in the game, and just 3-of-12 from beyond the arc.
- Yale shot 35 percent, and 6-for-17 from distance.
- BU held the edge in bench points, 12-7.
- The Bulldogs outrebounded the Terriers, 43-34, including a 14-7 mark in offensive boards.
- Yale also sported an advantage in points off turnovers (22-16) and second-chance points (13-4).
GAME NOTES
- Giannaros has scored in double figures in all three of her appearances this season, giving her 14 career games with 10 or more points.
- Johnson registered her 51st-career game in double digits.
- Pina is now tied for seventh place all-time at BU with 159 career three-pointers, sharing the title with Kelly Jo Gallagher '98.
- Durant moved to within three blocks of fourth place and 24 rebounds of 10th place in the Terrier annals.
- BU's 25 percent three-point shooting clip was its lowest since Mar. 10 in the Patriot League semifinal round at American.
- The Terriers still lead the all-time series against Yale, 11-6. However, the Bulldogs have won four in a row in the rivalry.
