Terriers Fall To American In 2022 Finale, 16-12

BOSTON – Junior Jennifer Barry became the program's all-time leader in draw controls, and classmate Lauren Kaye tallied four points, but the Boston University women's lacrosse program dropped its final game of the 2022 season to American, 16-12, on Friday evening at Nickerson Field.
Entering the fourth quarter tied 10-10, both teams traded goals in the opening five minutes of the frame to push the deadlock to 12. However, the Eagles shut out the Terriers over the final 10:14 of the game to pull away for the win.
Barry finished with a game-high eight draw controls to close her junior campaign with 239 career draw controls, surpassing Jill Horka's previous record of 236 set from 2013-16. Barry set the single-season program record this year with 156 draw controls.
Kaye totaled two goals and two assists, while freshman Matty Spaeth added three scores. Senior Kennady Smith, getting the start on her Senior Day, made nine saves between the pipes.
Emma Vinall totaled 11 points off nine goals and two assists. Becca Frank and Maddy Spratt supplied three points each. Mary Alice Collins racked up 10 saves between the pipes.
Before the game, BU honored its senior class with a ceremony for Smith, Sarah Mazza, Kylie Cadogan, Caroline Pinho, captains Emma Pfaff and Riley Kokoruda, and student manager Max Livingston.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- American scored two goals in the first 2:09 of the game off scores from Vinall and Spratt.
- BU responded with four straight goals to go ahead 4-2. Kaye found Spaeth at the 11:12 mark, and junior Claire Gola fed senior Caroline Pinho on the wing to tie the game.
- Kaye notched two unassisted tallies to put the home team up 4-2 with 5:50 left in the first quarter.
- The Eagles pulled within 4-3, but after sophomore Ellen Monahan found the back of the net, sophomore Tobey Tick beat the buzzer to push the Terriers ahead 6-3.
- The second quarter's first goal came 10 minutes into the stanza from Vinall's stick, but Barry responded by winning the ensuing draw control and finding the back of the net on the possession.
- Less than a minute later, Kaye passed from right to left of the fan through traffic, finding sophomore Kaelin Isaacson to give BU an 8-4 advantage.
- Vinall scored three goals for American in the final 2:03 of the half, settling the halftime score at 8-7 in favor of the Terriers.
- The Eagles tied the game at 8-8 3:35 into the third quarter, but Spaeth's free position strike as the clock read 9:28 returned the lead to BU.
- Two American tallies gave the visitors a 10-9 advantage before Gola found twine with 2:15 left in the stanza, putting the score at 10-10 after three quarters.
- Two free position goals for the Eagles returned the lead to the visitors, but Monahan buried her second goal of the game with just under four minutes gone by to cut into the deficit.
- Fifty-six seconds later, Spaeth tied the game at 12-12 with 10:14 on the clock in the fourth to complete the hat trick.
- Vinall put the Eagles ahead with 8:58 to play, and ended up scoring three of the final four goals of the game.
GAME NOTES
- Shots favored American, 37-30, including a 25-22 advantage in shots on target.
- BU held the advantage in draw controls, 16-15.
- Both sides successfully cleared all but one of their attempts.
- Kokoruda caused three turnovers and added three ground balls.
- Kaye finishes the season leading the team with 18 assists and 42 points.
- Spaeth's 29 goals this year paced the Terriers.
- Graduate student Jenny Feeney controlled a season-high six draws, and ended the season leading the team with 26 ground balls.
- Gola caused 18 turnovers in 2022, also a team-high.
