Terrier Twelve - #5: Track & Field and Cross Country Shine on Conference and National Stage

July 22, 2022

Returning for a 14th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 5 on this year's countdown is men's and women's track & field and cross country, as several individuals shined on the conference and national stage during all three seasons.

With first-year associate head coach of cross country and assistant coach of track & field Jordan Carpenter leading the distance program, the 2021-22 season began with strong showings by both cross country teams. The women narrowly finished as runners-up at the Patriot League Championship thanks to three harriers in the top five. Senior Andrea Claeson, graduate student Corinne Batsu and senior Meghan Convery were third, fourth and fifth, respectively to earn First Team All-Patriot League honors.

On the men's side, the Terriers finished third and boasted three Second Team All-Patriot League honorees in sophomore Matthew Mason, junior Kevin Murphy and senior Marcel Aubry, with the trio placing in the top 13 to pace the Terriers. Both the men and the women also ran well at the NCAA Northeast Regional, with the women earning their best finish since 2010 while the men had their best performance since 2017.

During the indoor season, freshman Toby Makoyawo made his presence known right away during a record-setting campaign. He broke the 22-year-old school record in the 60m dash in his first-ever race and eventually won the conference title in both that race and the 200m dash en route to being named Patriot League Male Rookie of the Meet. Makoyawo became the first BU sprinter to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2017, doing so in the 200m dash, and later went on to break the school, conference and New England record in the 100m dash at the Texas Relays.

Claeson continued her strong year by winning the conference title in both the mile and the 3,000m run. She was named PL Female Track Athlete of the Meet for her efforts. Two freshmen - Noelani Phillips and Emma Lawrence - won the 400m dash and the triple jump, respectively, in their conference championship debuts. In addition, Claeson, Convery, sophomore Isabela Shepard and graduate student Madeline Bachmann broke the school record in the distance medley relay by 13 seconds at the Columbia Challenge earlier in the season.

BU combined for eight gold medals at the PL Outdoor Championships, with Claeson claiming the conference crown in the 1,500m run and the 5,000m run en route to another Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Meet award. Senior Emma Montoya won the 400m hurdles title, freshman Kiana Lino took home gold in the shot put and sophomore Daisy Liljegren set a new meet record en route to victory in the 10,000m run. Convery was also part of another school record as she broke the program standard in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Penn Relays.

The Terriers swept the 1,500-meter titles with junior Foster Malleck crossing the line first in the men's race. Senior Kasim Cisse collected gold in the high jump while sophomore Uchenna Nwosu won the 110m hurdles. In total, the Terriers combined for 28 All-Patriot League selections across the three seasons and posted a top-three team finish at all six championship meets.

BU concluded its impressive year by qualifying 13 Terriers to the NCAA East Preliminary Meet, its largest contingent since 2011, with Liljegren advancing to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meter run and earning All-America honors to complete her debut season at BU.
