Gallagher, Hutson Earn Hockey East Monthly Honors
February 6, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Freshman Lane Hutson and sophomore Ty Gallagher of the Boston University men's ice hockey team each earned a monthly award from Hockey East, the league announced on Monday.
Hutson was named Hockey East Player of the Month while Gallagher garnered Hockey East Defender of the Month accolades. Both Terriers were outstanding as they helped BU go 7-1-0 in January, including 5-0-0 in league play.
Already a two-time Hockey East Defender of the Month, Hutson is the first rookie since March 2020 to be selected as the league's Player of the Month. He led Hockey East in both points (13) and assists (11) in January, notching a point in all eight games he played. Hutson began the month by providing the primary assist on Team USA's overtime goal in the bronze medal game of the World Junior Championship. He then flew from Nova Scotia to Phoenix the next day to notch an assist in the Terriers' 5-1 win over Air Force on Jan. 6.
Hutson enters Monday on a 10-game point streak, having notched 18 points (3g, 15a) in that span, including a league-high 13 in January (2g, 11a). He has put together five straight games with at least two assists, totaling 13 points in that stretch. He currently leads all NCAA defensemen with 35 points and 26 assists, with his 26 assists tops among all Hockey East skaters. Hutson is one of just four league skaters with over 30 points and is second only to Terrier senior Matt Brown among Hockey East players in points.
Gallagher was impressive at both ends of the ice during the Terriers' terrific January. He notched three goals and five assists for eight points, was a plus-8 and recorded 15 blocked shots while playing extended minutes at the end of the month. Gallagher's best game was on Jan. 27 against Boston College when he collected a career-best two goals and added two assists for a career-high four points in a 6-3 triumph over the Eagles. Gallagher scored his first goal of the season and also had a helper in the Terriers' 9-6 win over Maine on Jan. 21.
A native of Clarkston, Michigan, Gallagher enters Monday with three goals and a career-high 13 assists for 16 points, which matches his point total from last season. Gallagher is the third different Terrier to win Hockey East Defender of the Month honors this season, as no other school has claimed the award since the January 2022 awards were announced.
BU will face Northeastern on Monday night in the opening round of the 70th Dunkin' Beanpot. Puck drop at TD Garden is scheduled for 8 p.m.
