BU Prepped to Begin Patriot League Tournament Friday

BOSTON – Seeking its sixth Patriot League title and sixth NCAA berth in 10 years, the top-seeded Boston University women's tennis team will open the conference tournament with a Friday morning match against No. 8 Lafayette. First serve is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
The other two teams on BU's side of the bracket, No. 4 Bucknell and No. 5 Colgate, will play at 10:15 a.m. on Friday. On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 Army will face No. 6 Lehigh at 12:45 p.m. and No. 2 Navy will face No. 7 Loyola at 3:15 p.m.
The Terriers are 16-4 this season with a 5-0 record in Patriot League play. They enter the tournament on a seven-match win streak dating back to the 4-3 upset over then No. 49 Brown on March 18. Notable shutouts this season came against Bucknell, Bryant, MIT, UConn, Navy, Lehigh and Holy Cross. BU has dropped only three points in its last six matches.
Grad student Shelly Yaloz leads the Terriers in singles, both overall and in conference play. She is 14-5 at the No. 1 spot which includes a 5-0 record in PL matches. Junior Victoria Carlsten and sophomore Michelle Kleynerman are 4-0 in singles against PL opponents with Carlsten winning at Line 3 (3x) and Line 2 (1x) and Kleynerman winning all four matches at Line 2. Freshman Emily Zhao is also 4-0 in PL singles play with matches played in spots four, five and six.
Yaloz and Kleynermen lead BU in doubles with an overall record of 11-3 and a conference record of 3-0. Eight of the pair's wins have come at the No. 2 spot and they are on a six-match win streak. Junior Kaitlin Tan and senior Erica Di Battista are 6-5 from the No. 1 spot and boast a 2-0 PL record at that line. Carlsten and freshman Navya Vadlamudi are also 2-0 in conference play and have an overall record of 5-1 at the No. 3 spot.
The Terriers will face Lafayette in their fourth consecutive PL quarterfinal. BU posted two 4-0 wins against both Lafayette and Loyola Maryland before advancing to the championship game. The Terriers dropped a 4-1 contest in the final against Army West Point and will look to claim its second title in three years.
Entering Friday's match, the Leopards are 6-12 after defeating Holy Cross 4-0 in the opening round of the tournament.
