BOSTON – Senior
Caitlin Weimar and sophomore
Anastasiia Semenova each supplied double-doubles to help power the Boston University women's basketball program to a 55-48 triumph over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
BU (11-4, 3-1 PL) came out strong defensively on the Grreyhounds (6-9, 1-3 PL), limiting the visitors to six field goals on less than 21 percent shooting in the first half. Though Loyola Maryland made it a two-possession game on multiple occasions in the second half, the Terriers hung on for their eighth home win in the 2023-24 season.
Semenova captured her first collegiate double-double with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds. Weimar recorded 13 points, 12 boards, and matched her career-high with six blocks. Senior
Kelsi Mingo added 11 points off the bench.
Kelly Ratigan paced Loyola Maryland with eight points. Lex Therien, entering the day top-three in the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding, collected five points and 10 boards in 18 minutes before fouling out.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU scored the first 10 points of the contest with help from Giannaros and Semenova threes, coaxing a Greyhound timeout just 2:35 into the first quarter.
- Salmeron's jumper whittled the gap to 14-8, but Mingo delivered a three-pointer in transition from the left to wing to make it 17-8 Terriers after one quarter.
- The Terriers opened the second on a 7-2 run when Mingo canned another three, Semenova made a layup, and junior Alex Giannaros converted off her own miss. The latter pushed the lead to 24-10.
- Though BU was limited to zero field goals in the final 4:43 of the first half, foul shots from Semenova and freshman Audrey Ericksen provided a 32-17 cushion for BU at the break.
- A three-pointer from Kelly Ratigan and a jumper from Ava Therien ignited the third quarter for Loyola Maryland, prompting a Terrier timeout 1:14 into the stanza with a 12-point lead.
- Semenova made a pair of buckets near the hoop, while Beneventine knocked down a 12-foot jumper along the left baseline to put BU ahead 38-22 at the 5:35 mark of the third.
- BU went up 40-25 with 3:48 on the clock, but the Greyhounds ripped off nine-straight points to bring the game within two full possessions. Cristina Garcia supplied the final five points in the spurt.
- Senior Sophie Beneventine fed Semenova on the right block for a layup to halt the run, but the Terriers didn't score again until the clock read 6:10 in the fourth, where Ericksen sank a runner through the paint for a 44-36 advantage.
- Lex Therien got a right-wing three-pointer to fall to cut the deficit to five, but Mingo and Weimar delivered consecutive layups for breathing room with four minutes left in regulation.
- Ratigan made a triple with 3:13 to play, but Mingo cashed in her own three over a minute later to make it 52-42, helping seal the Terrier win.
