Caron, Celebrini Collect Hockey East Weekly Awards
January 15, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Junior Mathieu Caron and freshman Macklin Celebrini of the Boston University men's ice hockey team each earned a weekly award from Hockey East, the league announced on Monday.
Celebrini was chosen as Hockey East Rookie of the Week while Caron was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week. The British Columbia natives were instrumental in a pair of BU victories this past week.
Caron earned his first shutout as a Terrier on Saturday, stopping all 36 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over No. 16 New Hampshire. Eighteen of his saves came in the first period as he helped hold UNH scoreless on three power-play attempts, including two full minutes of 5-on-3 time. Earlier in the week, Caron made two clutch stops in overtime as part of a 24-save victory over Northeastern on Tuesday.
This is Caron's first Hockey East weekly award. Saturday was his fifth career shutout and first since Jan. 14, 2023, while he was with Brown. Caron has started all 19 games for BU this season, going 14-4-1 with a 2.42 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. Since Nov. 22, Caron is 6-1-0 with a .940 save percentage and a 1.57 goals-against average.
Celebrini continued his sensational freshman season by scoring three goals and adding an assist for four points across the two victories. After missing one game while he led Canada in scoring at World Juniors, Celebrini returned to the Terrier lineup on Tuesday by lighting the lamp and assisting on another goal for a two-point performance against Northeastern. He followed that with a pair of goals in Saturday's win over UNH.
At just 17 years old, Celebrini leads Hockey East and is second nationally in points per game (1.71). He is second in the league with 29 points and is third in the league with 13 goals. Celebrini has put together three straight multi-point games during his four-game point streak and has been held without a point just three times this season.
The top-ranked Terriers will return to action this weekend when they travel to Vermont for a two-game series that begins Friday.
