Caitlin Weimar scored her 1,000th point as a Terrier in a 22-point effort, junior
Alex Giannaros added 18 points, and the Boston University women's basketball program fended off Colgate in a 73-66 triumph on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
In a matchup of two 11-win teams on BU's Alumni Day, the Terriers (12-5, 4-2 PL) made over 52 percent of its shots and hit 19-of-21 from the free throw line, handing the Raiders (11-6, 4-2 PL) their second-consecutive loss.
Weimar also secured her 12th double-double of the year with a game-high 12 rebounds. Giannaros added five assists to her ledger. Freshman
Audrey Ericksen matched her career-high with 17 points on a trio of three-pointers, while sophomore
Anastasiia Semenova scored 10 points.
Tiasia McMillan led Colgate with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Alex Brodie and Sophia Diehl collected 14 and 11 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Giannaros and Ericksen connected on back-to-back layups for the latter to jumpstart an 8-0 BU run, building a 10-2 advantage.
- Though McMillan answered a Giannaros triple with a jumper to close the gap to 13-8 at the 3:27 mark, the Terriers closed the first quarter on an 8-0 swing. Giannaros sank a layup in transition, then senior Kelsi Mingo buried a right-corner three to make it 21-8.
- BU's largest lead in the first half manifested with 5:13 left in the second quarter, as Semenova worked the right block for a layup that pushed the edge to 29-14.
- After Amarah Streiff and Giannaros traded three-pointers, Colgate capped the frame on a 9-2 run.
- Semenova canned a jumper just inside the arc with 3:06 on the timer, but the Raiders held the Terriers off the scoreboard and found a basket from Diehl and Brodie's left-wing triple. BU led at the break, 34-26.
- The Terriers made their first six shots of the third to sport a 48-38 lead six minutes into the second half. Giannaros converted a nostalgic three-point play, Ericksen drilled a corner three, and Weimar collected six points on layups, the last a press break on a feed from freshman Aoibhe Gormley.
- Out of a BU timeout with 1:54 remaining in the third, Semenova dove through the left lane and took a pass from Ericksen off glass and in for a 51-42 edge.
- Semenova connected on another bucket from Gormley's fifth assist, but Brodie drilled a step-back three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 53-47 in BU's favor heading to the fourth.
- The Raiders pulled within one possession following McMillan's and-one layup 1:07 into the fourth, but Ericksen capitalized on a second-chance, straightaway three off senior Sophie Beneventine's pass to make it 58-52.
- Madison Schiller scored her only points of the game on a left-corner triple to put Colgate up 59-58 with 5:25 to play, the Raiders' first lead since its opening offensive possession.
- Ericksen countered with another Beneventine feed setting up a three-pointer, but Taylor Golembiewski drained a three herself to restore Colgate's one-point advantage at 62-61 with 4:33 on the clock.
- Weimar drew a foul against McMillan just under a minute later and nailed two foul shots to put the Terriers back in front by one, then got the ball on a screen-and-roll from Giannaros for a right-handed layup at the 2:24 mark to push the edge to 65-62.
- BU kept two Colgate shots from finding the net on the other end, and Giannaros raced down the left lane and banked a contested layup off glass to make it 67-62 Terriers with 1:42 left.
- Giannaros and Ericksen teamed up to swish all six of BU's ensuing free throws to preserve the victory.
STATS
- BU went 24-for-46 from the field, including 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from beyond the arc.
- Colgate made just under 40 percent of its shots, and also drained six three-pointers.
- The Terriers collected 20 assists. Beneventine matched her career-high with a team-best seven dishes, while Gormley's five also marked a season-high.
- Rebounding favored BU, 27-25.
- The Terriers surrendered 10 turnovers, matching its season-low from Jan. 6 at Lafayette.
- BU sported a 34-28 edge in points in the paint, while Colgate prevailed in points off turnovers (12-11) and second-chance points (14-8).
NOTES
- Weimar is the first Terrier to reach 1,000 points in a BU uniform since former teammate Sydney Johnson did so on Jan. 5, 2023 against Lafayette. Overall, she is the 26th Terrier in program history to accomplish the feat.
- With 1,017 points in the Scarlet and White, she needs 12 more to move into the top 25 in the BU annals.
- Giannaros' effort comes after she scored eight and five points in her previous two games. To date, she has never gone more than two Patriot League games without scoring 10 or more points.
- Ericksen equalized her previous career-high from Dec. 9 against Harvard. She has buried her last five three-pointers after going just 2-for-9 prior.
- Semenova has scored 10-plus points in three-straight games for the second time this season. She is shooting 50 percent from the field with 11 points per Patriot League contest.
- The Terriers have won 13-straight regular season conference matchups at home, dating back to Feb. 26, 2022.
- BU improved to 10-1 this year when scoring 60 or more points.
- The all-time series now stands at 19-9 in BU's favor.
