Giannaros Guides Terriers Past Mids, 69-60

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Junior Alex Giannaros buried a career-high seven three-pointers for 25 points, sophomore Anastasiia Semenova added 14 points, and the Boston University women's basketball program secured a 69-60 triumph over Navy on Saturday evening at Alumni Hall.

Though BU (15-9, 7-6 PL) never led by more than 13 points, the Terriers never trailed throughout the contest, limiting the Mids (9-15, 5-8 PL) to 25 percent shooting on 80 attempts in its first road victory since Jan. 6.

Overall, Giannaros made eight of her 11 shots from the field. Semenova provided eight rebounds with her 14 points. Freshman Aoibhe Gormley set career-highs with 10 rebounds and seven assists, while senior Caitlin Weimar blocked six shots.

Zanai Barnett-Gay tallied a game-high 26 points to go with 10 boards, while Sydne Watts registered 22 points and nine caroms.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU made five of its first six shots, as Giannaros scored the first five points on a right-lane layup and left-corner three. Navy called timeout at the 6:08 mark as BU raced out to a 12-2 lead.
  • Giannaros canned her second three midway through the first, and BU took a 16-5 lead, its largest of the frame, after Weimar's free throw with 4:38 on the clock.
  • The Terriers extended their lead to 26-16 after Giannaros' fourth triple of the day three minutes into the second quarter.
  • After another Giannaros three, Navy ripped off a 12-2 run to pull within 33-32. However, Gormley found Ericksen in the corner for a buzzer-beating triple to stake the Terriers to a four-point lead at halftime.
  • Barnett-Gay cut the gap to two on a jumper 55 seconds into the third, but Semenova responded with a straightaway three to replenish a five-point Terrier lead, 39-34.
  • The Navy freshman drilled a three with 2:49 left in the stanza to make it 44-43 in BU's favor, but the Terriers closed the quarter on an 8-0 run. Semenova sank a layup, then freshman Inés Monteagudo Pardo converted a nostalgic three-point play.
  • A left-elbow jumper for Semenova with 58 seconds to go pushed the Terrier lead to 51-43 after three quarters.
  • Neither side scored until 1:52 into the fourth, when senior Kelsi Mingo went up-and-under for a right-block layup that extended the lead to 53-43.
  • Free throws from Watts and Barnett-Gay closed the gap to six, but Giannaros delivered a three to spark an 8-0 Terrier burst. Semenova's layup and Mingo's corner triple created a 61-47 advantage with 5:28 to play in regulation.
  • Giannaros nailed a left-wing three at the 3:20 mark to help seal the victory, making the score 64-51 at the time. She along with Mingo and Semenova teamed up for five foul shots the rest of the way.
STATS
  • BU made 54.5 percent of its shots, going 24-for-44 from the field and 11-for-25 (44 percent) from deep.
  • Navy made just seven of their 30 attempts from deep for 23.3 percent.
  • The Terriers generated 16 assists on their field goals.
  • Rebounding favored the Mids, 47-39. Navy collected 28 offensive rebounds.
  • BU led for all but 16 seconds in the game.
  • The Terriers sported a 22-16 advantage in points in the paint.
NOTES
  • Giannaros surpassed her previous career-high of six triples, which came on Mar. 6, 2023 in the Patriot League quarterfinal round against Loyola Maryland. Her seven threes are the most in a league game this year.
  • At 44.2 percent in her career, Giannaros is the second-highest accurate three-point shooter among Division I active student-athletes.
  • Semenova scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half in her ninth 10-plus point performance this season.
  • Gormley eclipsed her personal-best seven rebounds from Nov. 18 at Rider, and five assists from Jan. 20 vs. Colgate.
  • After collecting a six-block game once in her first three collegiate seasons, Weimar has rejected six or more shots in four of her last nine games. Saturday marked just her third of 24 games this year scoring fewer than 10 points.
  • BU snaps its five-game road losing streak, capturing its first victory away from home since Jan. 6.
  • The all-time series now swings in the Terriers' favor at 11-10, with BU having won seven-straight in the rivalry.
