Macklin Celebrini of the Boston University men's ice hockey team were recognized with monthly awards from Hockey East, the league announced on Friday.
Hutson was named Hockey East Defender of the Month while Celebrini earned Hockey East Rookie of the Month accolades. This is the second time that Hutson has been named the league's Defender of the Month, as he won the award for November. Celebrini was the Hockey East Player of the Month and National Rookie of the Month for October.
No other player, regardless of class, scored more goals in January than Celebrini did. The youngest player in college hockey at 17 years old, Celebrini notched eight goals and added two assists for 10 points. He also won 51.9% of his faceoffs in January, which ranks first among league rookies who took at least 100 draws. Celebrini led Canada in scoring at the World Junior Championship with four goals and four assists for eight points, then followed that by notching seven points (6g, 1a) over his first four games back with BU. Overall, Celebrini enters the weekend ranked fourth overall and first among rookies with 1.59 points per game. He has tallied 35 points (18g, 17a) in 22 games, which is tied for second in Hockey East, tied for second among national rookies and tied for fourth overall in the country. In fact, Celebrini is one of just five players since the 2005-06 season to score 18 goals in his first 22 career games.
Hutson led all Hockey East defenders in January with 11 points on two goals and a league-high nine assists while also blocking 12 shots. He enters the weekend second among all NCAA defensemen with 10 goals and is tied for fourth among NCAA defensemen (first in HE) with 31 points. Hutson one of just two defensemen in the country who has reached double digits in both goals and assists this season. A gold medalist at this year's World Juniors, Hutson is also sixth among active NCAA defensemen with 79 career points (25g, 54a) in just 61 games; everyone above him has played at least 33 more games. Hutson has averaged an incredible 1.29 points per game in his career, which is far and away best in college hockey, and his 25 career goals ranks fourth among all active defensemen.
The Hobey Baker Award nominees will take the ice again on Friday night when the Terriers trek to New Hampshire. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
