2023-24 Women's Basketball Awards Banquet

Women’s Basketball Celebrates 2023-24 Season

April 30, 2024

BOSTON – The Boston University women's basketball program recognized its laurels from the 2023-24 season with its annual awards banquet on Wednesday (Apr. 24) in the Francis Burke Room at Agganis Arena.

The Terriers recognized a campaign where BU went 20-12, finishing its second-consecutive year with 20-plus wins for the first time since the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. BU went 10-8 in Patriot League play, and advanced to its second-straight Patriot League Championship appearance and third in the previous four seasons.

Two Terriers earned All-Patriot League status, including Caitlin Weimar's selection as the Patriot League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. She and Alex Giannaros were selected First Team All-Patriot League as well.

Head Coach Melissa Graves, the 2022-23 Patriot League Coach of the Year, tipped off the evening with highlights from her third season at the helm. BU's eight non-conference wins were the most since the program joined the Patriot League for the 2013-14 campaign, and captured a program-record 15 victories at Case Gym.

Following words from Senior Associate AD and team administrator Kate Bergstrom, seniors Sophie Beneventine, Kelsi Mingo, and Weimar addressed the team as they reflected on their Terrier tenures. Beneventine is set to graduate with a degree in Sociology from the College of Arts and Sciences, while Mingo Weimar will graduate from the School of Communication with degrees in Journalism and Advertising, respectively.

From there, Graves recognized team manager Vanessa Rosa as well as practice players Max Elliot, Josh Abella, Joseph Kim, Rameses Tanedo, and Colin O'Byrne for their contributions to the team throughout the season.

AWARDS

Sophomore Anastasiia Semenova was selected as the 2023-24 Most Improved Player. After scoring 36 total points across 22 appearances as a freshman, Semenova recorded eight points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 28 contests, making 18 starts. She shot over 45 percent from the field, making 20 three-pointers in the process.

Alex Giannaros earned the Impact Player distinction. Becoming the fifth Terrier ever to garner First Team All-Patriot League honors, Giannaros set personal-bests with 33.4 minutes per game, 32 games played, and 14.2 points per game, the latter ranking fifth in the Patriot League. She drained 42.4 percent of her three-pointers, which ranked 16th in Division I in 2023-24.

Finally, Caitlin Weimar received three team awards: the Practice Player of the Year, Legacy Award, and Most Valuable Player. The Practice Player of the Year Award goes to the Terrier that collected the most Practice Player of the Week, while the Legacy Award goes to the Terrier who has made a lasting, positive impact on the program and the community.

Weimar, who became the program's first-ever Patriot League Player of the Year, ECAC Division I Player of the Year, and two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, closed her BU career ranked 11th in program history with 1,277 points in three seasons. She is also second all-time with 178 blocks and 9.8 rebounds per game, third with 15 points per game and a .551 field goal percentage, and fifth with 835 rebounds.

This past season, Weimar paced the Patriot League with 18.7 points per game, and was the only Division I student-athlete in the nation to average over 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game.
