May 2, 2024 | Men's Tennis
BOSTON – Riding a 10-game win streak, the Patriot League champion Boston University softball team will visit No. 12 national seed and reigning Ivy League champion Harvard on Friday with doubles action slated to begin at 2 p.m. Summit League champion Denver and Big 10 member Michigan State will open the regional at 11 a.m. with the Beren Tennis Center serving as host site.
The seven-time conference champion Terriers are making their first-ever NCAA appearance after hoisting their first PL trophy this past Sunday with a thrilling 4-3 win over five-time defending champion Navy. BU last won a conference title back in 1996 when in the America East, but the NCAA only started awarding automatic NCAA bids in 1999. BU Hall of Famer and 1984 ATP Tour Rookie of the Year Bob Green ('82) represented the Terriers in the 1982 NCAA singles tournament.
2024 PL Tournament MVP and reigning PL Rookie of the Year Corey Craig leads the charge with a 26-1 record at No. 1 singles with the lone loss occurring at then-No. 6 Harvard. Sophomore Jakob Esterowitz owns a 10-3 mark at No. 2 singles after clinching the PL title in a 2:46 marathon match, while classmate Alejandro Licea has combined for 12 wins across courts 2 and 3.
Freshman Gustavs Dambins has totaled 14 wins at lines 2-6 with five victories in the No. 5 slot. Senior Ben Letzer and junior Dion Loutas have also reached the double-digit win marks in the spring across courts 3-6.
Led by 10th-year head coach Dejan Stankovic, BU (21-7) will visit for the second time this spring a Harvard squad (20-6) that currently ranks No. 12 in the latest ITA poll and clinched its third straight Ivy League title back on April 21 with a 4-3 victory over then-No. 27 Princeton. The Crimson own 11 wins this spring against Top-75 opponents, including then-No. 8 Columbia (4-2) and No. 13 Duke (4-3). Harvard is a perfect 13-0 at home after posting a 7-0 win over BU back on Feb. 29 at the indoor Murr Center.
The Crimson are the only team in the regional to compete in the NCAAs last season, advancing to the Sweet 16 with 4-0 wins over Siena and Arizona State.
