Hutson Named Hockey East Defender of the Week
January 20, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Freshman Cole Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been named Hockey East Defender of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Hutson was excellent in the Terriers' weekend sweep of No. 19/18 New Hampshire this past weekend. He capped Friday's 6-3 win with the goal of the weekend, earning his way onto Sportscenter with a spectacular individual effort that completed a two-point night. Hutson then assisted on classmate Cole Eiserman's equalizer in an eventual 2-1 overtime win over the Wildcats on Saturday.
A native of Chicago, Hutson has been red hot for the past month. He closed out the first semester with four points (2g, 2a), including the final two goals of the night, in the Terriers' 4-2 comeback win at UMass on Dec. 11. He then helped the United States win gold at the World Junior Championship, becoming the first defenseman in tournament history to lead World Juniors in scoring thanks to 11 points on three goals and eight assists, including the tying goal in the gold-medal game.
Since returning to the Terrier lineup on Jan. 10, Hutson has extended his point streak to five games, scoring three goals and adding seven assists for 10 points in that span. He leads all NCAA freshmen defensemen in points (20) and assists (15) and is averaging a point per game this season.
No. 8 BU will return to action on Friday night at Agganis Arena when the Terriers begin a home-and-home series with No. 1 Boston College. The Battle of Comm Ave. will then move to Chestnut HIll on Saturday; both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
