Terriers Clinch PL Regular Season Title With 1-0 Win Over Raiders

BOSTON – Senior Margy Porta found the back of the net in the 59th minute to guide the Boston University women's soccer program to the Patriot League regular season championship in a 1-0 victory over Colgate on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.

BU (10-4-3, 7-1-1 PL) and Colgate (9-5-4, 6-2-1 PL) entered the match tied atop the Patriot League table with a chance to capture the No. 1-seed for the Patriot League Tournament. The Terriers registered their seventh consecutive win and sixth straight shutout to secure home field advantage for the postseason for the first time since 2021.

Porta scored off assists from senior Morgan Weaver and sophomore Olivia Avellar. Sophomore goalkeeper Bridget Carr registered five saves for the second straight contest.

Ava McCloskey led the Raiders with three shots. Netminder Ella Poppinga made nine stops between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate maintained most of the possession in the opening minutes, but BU had the first shots from senior Helene Tyburczy's blocked header off a corner kick and classmate Shayla Brown's volley atop the box that Poppinga stopped in the fifth minute.
  • Carr lined up Ari Bezanson's try from 15 yards away in the 11th minute for her first save of the night.
  • Around the 17th minute, Brown intercepted a Colgate marker after a Raider free kick and gave off to Avellar, but Poppinga swallowed her rolling attempt. Moments later, Colgate held firm on three straight Terrier corner kicks.
  • The Raiders threatened with under two minutes until halftime when the Terriers cleared a frenzy in front of their own net to set up a Colgate corner kick. From there, Carr leaped to turn aside Adelaide Brislen's insert.
  • Porta supplied the second half's first shot in the 54th minute, but Poppinga read it to make the save.
  • BU broke the ice when Weaver raced into Raider territory following a free kick in the 59th minute. She dished to Avellar down the right flank, and the sophomore's cross bounced once to Porta, who blasted the ball inside the right post past Poppinga.
  • Junior Kat Slott had multiple opportunities to increase the Terrier lead in the 64th and 71st minutes, but Poppinga denied her.
  • Senior Giulianna Gianino picked off a Colgate pass at midfield in the 82nd minute and laced a 20-yard try to the lower-left corner, where Poppinga sent it away. The Raiders cleared the ensuing corner kick.
  • With less than three minutes left in regulation, Weaver headed away a cross from Bezanson. Josie Tunney found the ball for a shot that Carr collected in front.
STATS
  • Shots favored the Terriers, 16-10, including 10-5 on target.
  • Both teams combined for 14 corner kicks, though the Terriers had a 4-0 edge in that category in the second half.
  • Neither side was issued a card in the match.
  • Seven Terriers played the full 90 minutes: Carr, Weaver, Gianino, Tyburczy, senior Mackenzie Stickelman, sophomore Alli Powderly and freshman Nina Tzouganatos.
NOTES
  • Porta tallied her third goal of the season and 11th point in 2025, all of which came during BU's seven-game winning streak.
  • Avellar extended her points streak to three games. Nine of her 10 points this year came against Patriot League foes.
  • Weaver recorded her first assist since Aug. 15, 2024 against Northwestern.
  • BU allowed just two goals across eight matches at Nickerson Field in the regular season, both occurring on Aug. 21. The home shutout streak extends to the last 553:26.
  • The Terriers have outscored their opponents 23-2 during their winning streak.
  • BU improves to 12-4-1 all-time against Colgate.
