Hutson's Winner Lifts No. 18/19 Terriers Over No. 12 Northeastern, 4-3
November 22, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON — Sophomore Cole Hutson once again played the overtime hero as the No. 18/19 Boston University men's ice hockey team toppled No. 12 Northeastern, 4-3, in overtime at Agganis Arena on Saturday night.
The Terriers (6-7-1, 4-4-0 HE) took an early lead and held it until the final 61 seconds of regulation, when the Huskies (8-4-0, 4-3-0 HE) got the tying goal to send the game to extra time.
4:07 into overtime, Hutson gathered the puck in the Terriers' defensive zone and broke away, beating the goaltender on his glove-side to win the game.
A power-play strike from junior Jack Harvey at 4:09 and a Hutson goal at 13:33 put BU in the driver's seat early. Northeastern would score with just 2.7 seconds remaining in the first to cut into BU's lead.
Freshman Jonathan Morello scored the only tally of the second period, potting a shorthanded goal at 2:07 in the frame. Northeastern's Dylan Hryckowian scored both third-period goals.
BU outshot Northeastern 47-24 and sophomore goaltender Mikhail Yegorov earned the win with 21 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Huskies were called for a too many players penalty and the Terriers capitalized, as senior forward Owen McLaughlin slid the rubber to a wound up Harvey, who fired the puck home for the early lead at 4:11.
- After Hutson went almost the length of the ice by himself, he flung the puck just wide of the goal, but picked up his own rebound and wrapped around the goal, tucking the rubber into the cage to make it 2-0 at 13:33.
- The Terriers almost took a two-goal lead into the second, but the Huskies scored a power-play goal with just 2.7 seconds remaining in the frame.
- BU had to kill seven penalty minutes in the second and kept a clean sheet during those minutes.
- The Terriers even got a goal. Freshman Ben Merrill capitalized on a Husky turnover and streaked down the ice with Morello to his right. He perfectly timed his pass and Morello beat the Northeastern netminder clean with a one-timer to make it 3-1 at 2:07.
- Freshman Charlie Trethewey took a major penalty and was given a game misconduct for contact to the head with 5:06 remaining in the second.
- The Terriers killed the five-minute major and entered the final frame with a 3-1 advantage.
- Northeastern would come within a goal with 12:44 to go, as Hryckowian scored off a rebound.
- Then Hryckowian scored again with 1:01 to play, with his shot careening off Hutson and into the net to tie the game and send it to overtime.
- Hutson would have the final say in overtime, though, as junior captain Gavin McCarthy won a puck battle and kicked it out to Hutson, who carried the puck all the way down the ice and won the game.
- Hutson scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season and now has 18 points on the year.
- He is tied for the Hockey East lead with three game-winning goals this season.
- He has tallied at least one point in eight of the Terrier's' last nine contests.
- Morello's goal was his second shorthanded tally this season, marking the first time a freshman has scored multiple shorthanded goals since Joel Farabee accomplished the feat in the 2018-19 season.
- Harvey's power-play goal was the first man-advantage tally of his career.
- The Terriers scored their sixth shorthanded goal of the season, just one shy of their 2024-25 total number of shorthanded goals.
- BU is now 173-71-12 against Northeastern.
- The Terriers will hit the road on Saturday, Nov. 29 as they travel to New York, New York to play Cornell in the 10th edition of Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden.
- Puck drop is set for 8 p.m.
