No. 8 Terriers Set for Thursday's NCAA Tournament Opener against No. 9 Ohio State (ESPNU, ESPN+, TSN+)

The No. 8 Boston University men's ice hockey team will begin its quest for the program's sixth NCAA title when the Terriers face No. 9 Ohio State in the opening game of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Toledo, Ohio. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Thursday's game between the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the NCAA Toledo Regional will be televised live on ESPNU and streamed on ESPN+, with fans in Canada able to watch on TSN+. In addition, an audio-only broadcast will be located here.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU is making its 40th NCAA tournament appearance (25 in last 35 tournaments), which ranks third all-time (Minnesota has 42 and Michigan has 41). 
  • The Terriers have advanced to the Frozen Four in each of the last two years.
  • BU enters Thursday's game with an all-time record of 47-40-0 (.540) in NCAA tournament play.
  • The Terriers haven't played since last week's loss to UConn in the Hockey East semifinals.
  • Junior Quinn Hutson and freshman Kamil Bednarik lit the lamp in that game.
  • Freshman Cole Hutson assisted on Quinn's 21st goal of the season while sophomore Aiden Celebrini and freshman Cole Eiserman had the helpers on Bednarik's marker.
  • Cole, the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, is first among NCAA rookies in both points (40) and assists (28).
  • He leads all rookie defensemen as well as all Hockey East blue liners, regardless of class, in goals (12), assists (28) and points (40); Hutson is also third among all NCAA defensemen in points, is tied for second among all defensemen in goals and assists and leads all blue liners with 1.14 points per game.
  • Quinn enters Thursday ranked third in the NCAA with 1.38 points per game.
  • He is one of just eight skaters to have notched 20+ goals and 25+ assists this season, and he reached those two marks in the fewest amount of games (32) than the other five men to accomplish that feat.
  • BU enters the weekend ranked fourth in the NCAA on the power play, converting on 27.9% of its chances.
  • That includes a 2-for-3 mark across two Hockey East playoff games.
  • BU has also been sharp on the penalty kill during the second half of the season.
  • Since Jan. 1, the Terriers are ranked eighth in the NCAA and first in Hockey East with an 86.0% success rate on the penalty kill.
  • Freshman Mikhail Yegorov enters the weekend ranked seventh in the nation in save percentage (.931) and 10th in the NCAA in goals-against average (1.99).
  • Among NCAA Tournament participants, Yegorov ranks fourth in save percentage and sixth in GAA.

HISTORY WITH OHIO STATE

  • This will be the fourth time BU and Ohio State will have met.
  • The last time these two teams met was in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, with BU besting the Buckeyes, 8-3, in Manchester, New Hampshire, en route to claiming the program's fifth national title. 
  • The two teams first faced off on Dec. 28, 1973, in Jack Parker's second-ever game as head coach. 
  • That day, the Terriers defeated Ohio State, 6-5, at the RPI Invitational. 
  • BU also beat Ohio State, 3-2, on Dec. 27, 1998 in the opening round of the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis.

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES

  • Ohio State enters the tournament with a 24-13-2 overall record. 
  • The Buckeyes took Michigan State to double overtime of Saturday's Big Ten Tournament title game before falling to the Spartans, 4-3. 
  • Former Northeastern standout Gunnarwolfe Fontaine leads Ohio State with 40 points on a team-best 17 goals and 23 assists. 
  • Riley Thompson (17g, 16a) and Davis Burnside (14g, 19a) are tied for second on the squad with 33 points while graduate student Aiden Hansen-Bukata paces the Buckeyes with 27 assists. 
  • Logan Terness (12-9-1) and Kristoffer Eberly (12-4-1) have split goaltending duties this season, with Terness starting each of the last five games. 
  • Terness, who faced BU once in 2022-23 while with UConn, owns a 2.27 GAA and a .925 save percentage while Eberly has a 2.28 GAA and a .915 save percentage.
  • New Hampshire transfers Damien Carfagna (7g, 21a) and Jake Dunlap (3a) both faced BU during the 2022-23 season while Hansen-Bukata played for RIT in last year's Sioux Falls Regional semifinal against BU.
UP NEXT
  • The winner of the BU-Ohio State game will face the winner of the regional's second semifinal of the day between top-seeded Michigan State and fourth-seeded Cornell.
  • Puck drop on Saturday will be at either 4 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. ET.
