Sev Popolizio's induction to the Hall of Fame marked the first time a Boston University wrestler had been so honored.
Graduating in 1977, Popolizio earned four letters in wrestling. Competing primarily at 134 pounds, he compiled a 68-4-2 record in dual meets for a .932 winning percentage. In championship meets, Popolizio won four Greater Boston titles, three times and made it to the quarterfinals as a junior.
As a freshman, Popolizio was 15-1-2 in dual meets. He won his first GBC and Yankee Conference titles. An overtime loss in the finals of the New Englands kept him from competing in the NCAA Tournament that year.
Popolizio repeated at GBC and Yankee Conference champion his sophomore year and was undefeated in dual meets compiling an 18-0 mark. He won his first New England title and made a trip to the national championships.
A co-captain as a junior, Popolizio was 17-1 in dual meets. He suffered only two takedowns all season and led the Terriers in pins, points and takedowns. The Schnectady, N.Y. native was named most valuable player of the team and won the GBC title again. He also took second in the New Englands and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament where he advanced to the quarterfinals.
Popolizio wound up his collegiate career with a 19-2 dual meet record, his fourth straight GBC title, a third Yankee Conference crown, a second New England title and his third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Popolizio also received the E. Ray Speare Award as the University's top male student-athlete.
