#6 Old Dominion Defeats Field Hockey, 6-5

BOSTON, MA (October 2) -- The defending national champion Old Dominion field hockey team topped No. 14 Boston University, 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Old Dominion University's Foreman Field.
The No. 6 Lady Monarchs improve to 8-3 overall (4-0 CAA) while the Terriers fall to 7-2 overall (4-0 America East).
Old Dominion jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Adrienne Moder from freshman forward Tiffany Snow at 33:00 and Snow's tally less than two minutes later at 31:22.
Senior forward Danielle DeCoste (Fall River, MA) scored her fifth goal of the season at 29:59 to cut the ODU lead to 2-1.
Beth Anders' squad added two more scores from Kim Miller and Mariana DiGiacomo to take a commanding 4-1 lead with 16:27 remaining in the first half.
Senior co-captain Tina McDavitt (Walpole, MA) helped the Terriers respond to the 4-1 deficit with two goals in a 4:29 span. McDavitt's first score was set up by senior forward Jacyln Mele (Fairfield, NJ) and sophomore midfielder Kerry Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY). Her second score from junior midfielder Robyn Kenney (Whitehouse Station, NJ) came at :46 of the first half.
ODU held a 4-3 lead at halfitme.
Tiffany Snow added her second goal of the game at 33:31 staking the Lady Monarchs to a 5-3 lead.
Boston University sophomore forward Jane Rogers (Watertown, MA) edge the Terriers closer with her fifth goal of the season at 18:20. DeCoste found the back of the cage 1:08 later to tie the game at 5-5. The goal gave DeCoste her third multiple goal effort of the season.
ODU's Marina DiGiacomo netted the game-winner on a penalty corner with just over four minutes to play.
Old Dominion's goalie Mary Beth Freeman had two saves, while her B.U. counterparts senior Noreen Flanagan (Red Bank, NJ) and sophomore Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) had six and eight saves respectively.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Terriers,26-8, and held the advantage in penalty corner situations,10-4. It was only the second time this season that B.U. was on the opposite end of both catergories.
B.U. remains winless against Old Dominion falling to 0-8 all-time.
The Terriers return to the field on Sunday, October 3 to play Richmond at Old Dominion's Foreman Field at 12 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Senior forward Danielle DeCoste's moved into 10th place tie on the Terriers all-time scoring list with (21 goals-17 assists-59 points); senior co-captain Tina McDavitt (20-14-54) moves into 12th place on the Terriers all-time scoring list..Fourteen different Terriers have notched at least one point this season...
