Field Hockey Defeats Northeastern In Overtime
October 23, 1999 | Field Hockey
In a crosstown battle fought fiercely from beginning to end, the Boston University Terriers completed a perfect conference record by defeating host Northeastern 3-2 in overtime.
BU sophomore Kerry Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) sent a sweeping backhander from a prone position into the far side of the NU goal to finalize the Terrier triumph just under five minutes into the extra frame. Northeastern's Jackie Carl scored the early first goal, and the Huskies held a 1-0 advantage through the first half.
But BU players Tina McDavitt (Walpole, MA) and Jane Rogers (Watertown, MA) scored back-to-back goals in the second to put NU on a desperate comeback trail. Northeastern forward Heidi Benson converted late in the game to send it into overtime.
The win clinches the America East regular season title for the Terriers, meaning they will host the annual America East postseason tournament which takes place the weekend of Nov. 5.
Sally Starr's squad hosts Princeton University at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 24 at Nickerson Field.
