BOSTON, MA (November 7) -- America East Rookie of the Year Jane Rogers (Watertown, MA) scored both goals as the Boston University Terriers defeated the Northeastern University Huskies, 2-0, in the championship game of the America East field hockey tournament played this afternoon at Nickerson Field.
With the win, B.U. secured an automatic berth to the 1999 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship beginning Friday, November 13 at campus sites to be determined. It is the Terriers first trip to the NCAAs since 1996 and sixth overall and third America East Championship.
Rogers tallied what proved to be the game-winner at 21:39 of the second half from sophomore midfielder Kerry Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY).
Rogers, who was named tournament most outstanding player, notched her fourth multi-goal of the year at 16:22 from junior midfielder Robyn Kenney (Whitehouse Station, NJ).
Northeastern's Maureen Connelly (Greenland, NH) had the Huskies best scoring chance of the day at the 9:03 mark of the first half when she was stopped from five yards out by B.U. starting goalie Noreen Flanagan (Red Bank, NJ). Flanagan came out of the cage to cut down Connelly's angle and stoned the scoring bid.
The Terriers outshot the Huskies, 11-10, but N.U. held the advantage in penalty corner situations, 9-4.
B.U. tied a team-record with its 17th win. The Terriers also won 17 games in 1996 (17-5) and 1985 (17-4-2).
Sally Starr's squad will have to wait until Wednesday, November 10 when the NCAA pairings are announced.
