Field Hockey Falls To UMass In Penalty Strokes, 2-1

AMHERST, MA (Oct. 4) - The 14th-ranked Boston University field hockey team went to the second series of penalty strokes before falling to No. 7 Massachusetts, 2-1 at Amherst on Oct. 4. It is the second-straight loss to a top-10 school for the Terriers, who fell to No. 2 Old Dominion, 7-1 on Sept. 30. B.U. falls to 7-4 while UMass improves to 9-2 on the season.
Rachael Stillings' (Escondido, CA) late goal on a penalty corner, her second of the season, sent the game into overtime with 9:12 left in regulation. Jane Rogers and Kate Cusick picked up assists on the play. Lindsay Abbott's first half goal, 11:48 into the game, gave the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead.
The game was evenly matched throughout. B.U. outshot UMass, 10-9 and had 10 penalty corners to the Minutewomen's seven. Goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) stopped seven shots for the Terriers, as did her counterpart, Zowie Tucker.
The Terriers will look to rebound on Friday, October 6 when they travel to Drexel University for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Dragons. B.U. is currently 4-0 and in first place in the America East Conference. The Terriers defeated Drexel, 3-2 last October 8th at Nickerson Field.
