April 22, 2000 | Women's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, NY (April 22) - Juniors Chrissy Lombard (Ellicott City, MD) and Kyle Rutkowski (Ellicott City, MD) each scored two goals, but it went for naught, as the 10th ranked Boston University Terriers fell to the 13th ranked Syracuse Orangewomen, 6-5, at the Carrier Dome on April 22.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Terriers, and their frustration with Syracuse continues.
Last season, B.U. lost a pair of one-goal games to Syracuse, 10-9 on April 5, 1999 in Boston, and 9-8 in overtime at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT in the 1999 ECAC semifinals.
Sophomore Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) started the scoring for Syracuse with 28:12 remaining, scoring on a pass from senior Kara Hanover (Camillus, NY). Lombard, this week's America East Player of the Week, tied the score with her 36th goal of the season on a free position shot.
With 21:46 remaining in the first half, Hanover assisted Hable on her first goal of the day. Trailing, 2-1, B.U.'s Kristin Abruzzese (Medford, NJ)tied the game at 2-2 with her goal at 14:47.
Hable assisted on the next pair of Syracuse goals, aiding Healy and junior Stacey Brown (Scotia, NY). Healy scored unassisted with six seconds left in the first half to give Syracuse a 5-2 at halftime.
In the second half, Kyle Rutkowski netted her first goal of the game with 21:18 remaining on an assist from Ericka Hergenroeder (Annapolis, MD). Hable matched Rutkowski's tally with Syracuse's final goal with 23:03 left in the game, before the Syracuse defense was tested.
Rutkowski scored again with 8:07 to play to close the gap to 6-4. Lombard added B.U.'s final goal of the game with 3:49 to play.
Syracuse's freshman goalkeeper Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA) had 15 saves, holding off the late Boston rally for the win.
B.U.'s Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD), who leads all Division I goalies in goals against average, made 6 saves in the loss.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Terriers.
