Women's Lacrosse Defeats Hofstra 12-11
April 30, 2000 | Women's Lacrosse
BOSTON, MA (April 30) -- Boston University sophomore midfielder Kristin Abruzzese (Medford, NJ) scored five goals and assisted on one more, leading the Terriers to a 12-11 victory over America East rival Hofstra. The victory gives Boston University its first-ever undefeated regular-season in America East play, and assured the Terriers, ranked No. 10 in the Brine/IWLCA Division I rankings, of their first-ever No. 1 seeding in the America East Tournament.
A see-saw game from beginning to end, the Terriers (13-3, 6-0 America East) started slow, spotting the 20th ranked Flying Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead by the 21-minute mark. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Rutkowski (Ellicott City, MD) opened the scoring for the Terriers at 20:45, and by the 15-minute mark the Terriers had overtaken the lead, 3-2. The Flying Dutchwomen (10-5, 4-2 America East) regained the lead, 4-3, at the 10:54 mark, only to see B.U. tie it up again 15 seconds later at 10:39.
Hofstra would take over control of the rest of the first half, though, reeling off four goals while allowing only one, and the Flying Dutchwomen went into halftime leading, 8-5.
The second half, however, was all Terriers. Costly yellow cards to the Flying Dutchwomen's Kathleen Mikowski (22:37) and Melissa Coffas (11:58) shifted momentum from Hofstra to the surging Terriers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD) allowed only three goals in the second half while her teammates scored seven in her support. Abruzzese added to her two first half goals with tallies at 22:36, 12:43, and 11:34 of the final frame. Her final goal tied the game, 10-10, but Hofstra regained the lead, 11-10, with 6:25 left in the game. Abruzzese then assisted on senior attack Jennifer Manning's (Annapolis, MD) tying goal at 5:44.
With 2:05 left in the game, Manning assisted on sophomore midfielder Ericka Hergenroeder's (Annapolis, MD) eventual game-winner, closing the book on the Terriers' second consecutive 13-3 season.
Boston University will host No. 4 seed New Hampshire in the semi-finals of the America east Tournament, on Wednesday, May 3rd, at 3:30 p.m. on Nickerson Field.
