First Time In The NCAA Championships The Terriers are competing in their first NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships. B.U. earned one of the 10 at-large berths with its 15-3 record and strength of schedule.
B.U. and Syracuse Are The Only NCAA Rookies The Terriers and Orangewomen are the only two newcomers to the 12-team NCAA field this season. Last season, both teams battled in the ECAC semifinals.
Three Teams From The Northeast For the first time in the 19-year history of the Division I Women's Lacrosse Championships, three teams from the Northeast will be competing for the NCAA title. The three teams are Boston University, Dartmouth, and Syracuse.
America East Champions The Boston University Terriers are the 2000 America East Women's Lacrosse Champions. B.U. defeated New Hampshire, 18-7 in the semifinals on May 3rd, and downed Hofstra, 18-8 in the championship on May 6th. The title is B.U.'s first in the sport of women's lacrosse. The Terriers, who were 4-8 in their first two seasons of conference play, are 11-1 over the last two seasons.
That Winning Feeling With its 15 wins this season, B.U. has established a new team record for wins in a season. The 15 wins, breaks last seasons mark of 14 wins.
Murphy Repeats as America East Coach of the Year Terriers' head coach Sue Murphy was named America East Coach of the Year for the second-straight season. Murphy, who is in her fifth season at B.U., continues to improve the Terriers every year. Last season it was 14 wins and ECACs, and this year it's 15 wins and the NCAAs.
Lombard First Repeat Winner of America East Player of the Year Award Boston University junior attack Chrissy Lombard (Ellicott City, MD) became the first repeat winner of the America East Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year Award. The award, which is voted upon by the conference's coaches, has been given since 1996.
Barrett Among Top Goalies In Division I Sophomore goalie Brooke Barrett continues to be ranked among the top goalies in Division I in goals against average with a 6.83 GAA.
Terriers On The Defensive The Boston University women's lacrosse team ranks 2nd in Division I in scoring defense in the latest NCAA team statistics (April 30th)... B.U. had allowed 108 goals in 16 games for a 6.75 gpg average.
Ten Spot The number 10 has been a key numeral for the Terriers on both offense and defense in the Sue Murphy era... Since 1996, B.U. has a 33-11 (.738) record in games when it holds its opponent under 10 goals... The Terriers also have a 37-7 (.829) mark in games when they score 10 goals or more, including a 28-0 record in their last 28 games scoring 10 or more goals.
Terriers Place Seven on America East All-Conference Teams The 2000 edition of Boston University Women's Lacrosse placed five players on the America East All-Conference First Team, and two players on the America East All-Conference Second Team. Junior Chrissy Lombard (Ellicott City, MD) was named to the first team for the third consecutive year, and sophomore midfielder was named to the first team for the second straight year. Senior defender Michelle Ellsworth (Cicero, NY), sophomore attack Ericka Hergenroeder (Annapolis, MD), and sophomore goalie Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD) earned their first All-Conference recognition. Junior attack Kyle Rutkowski (Ellicott City, MD), who was a first-team selection in 1999, was named to the 2000 second team. Joining her on the second team was sophomore defender Gabby Juocys (Rochester, MI), who earned her first all-conference accolades.
America East All-Tournament Team Junior attack Chrissy Lombard and Kyle Rutkowski earned America All-Tournament honors for the second straight season. Sophomore midfielder Kristin Abruzzese (Medford, NJ), and sophomore attack Ericka Hergenroeder joined Lombard and Rutkowski on the team with their first All-Tournament nods.
Abruzzese Named Most Outstanding Player Sophomore midfielder Kristin Abruzzese (Medford, NJ) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2000 America East Women's Lacrosse Championship. Abruzzese tallied four goals and an assist in B.U.'s 18-7 win over New Hampshire in the America East semifinals on May 3rd, and rifled home a career-high five goals in the Terriers' 18-8 win over Hofstra in the America East Championship game on May 6th. For her two-game totals of nine goals and one assist, Abruzzese was named Most Outstanding Player.
Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Honors Abruzzese Kristin Abruzzese was named Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Women's Division I Player of the Week for the week ending May 7th. Abruzzese's 9-1-10 in the two-day America East tournament helped B.U. claim their first-ever championship and helped propel the Terriers to their first-ever NCAA tournament.
Terriers Set America East Tournament Records B.U. broke the America East tournament record for most goals scored in a game with 18 in both the semifinals vs. New Hampshire , and the championship game vs. Hofstra. The previous record of 17 goals in a game was achieved by both Delaware and Towson. The Terriers two-day total of 36 goals broke Delaware's record of 29 set during the 1999 tournament... Chrissy Lombard tied the tournament for most assists with five.
Lombard Becomes B.U.'s All-Time Leading Scorer Junior attack Chrissy Lombard (Ellicott City, MD) assisted on junior midfielder Renee Vanderbrug's (Lexington, MA) second goal of the game with 29:27 remaining in the second half to become Boston University's all-time leading scorer in the sport of women's lacrosse. Lombard finished the day with a goal and three assists to bring her career totals to 133 goals and 54 assists for 187 points. She broke Chris Fleming's (84) record of 185 career points. Lombard's 133 goals ranks 2nd on B.U.'s all-time list. Fleming has the record with 163 goals, and her assist total is 2nd behind teammate Jen Manning (Annapolis, MD, who has 66 career assists.
Barrett All-Time Saves Leader Sophomore goalie Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD) became B.U.'s all-time saves made leader when she stopped 11 Hofstra shots in the 2000 America East Championship game on Saturday, May 6th. Barrett broke Madeera Kathpal's (97) record of 286 saves.
Terriers In The Century Club Three current member of the Boston University women's lacrosse team have scored 100 or more career points. Junior attack Chrissy Lombard, the school's all-time leading scorer has 187, followed by senior attack Jen Manning (103-66-169), and junior midfielder Kyle Rutkowski (80-31-111).
Turning It Around B.U. head coach Sue Murphy, now in her fifth season with the Terriers, has turned the Terrier program into a national contender in just five seasons. As a rookie coach in 1996, Murphy squad was 4-11, losing 15-5 to Vermont and 30-4 to Temple that season. In 1997 the team was 3-13 and 2-4 in its first season in the America East conference. In 1998, Murphy's Terriers finished the season over .500 for the first time with an 8-7 mark and 2-4 record in the conference. B.U. picked up wins over Vanderbilt, and Massachusetts, Murphy's alma mater. Last season, the Terriers rewrote the women's lacrosse record books at B.U. with a 14-5 record and 5-1 mark in America East. A 30-4 loss to Temple just three seasons prior was reversed to a 10-9 Terrier win to open up the 99 campaign. In fact, B.U. reeled off eight straight wins to open the season, including a 20-2 win over Vermont, another team that B.U. struggled with just three seasons ago. Last year culminated with the team's first post-season appearance, an ECAC berth. B.U. lost to Syracuse, 9-8 (ot) in the semfinals. This season, B.U. is enjoying its best season ever with a 15-3 record and first NCAA tournament berth. The 15 wins are a school record, and key wins include a 7-4 win over then No. 4 North Carolina at Johns Hopkins, and a 10-6 win over then No. 8 Delaware. The win over the Fightin' Blue Hens snapped Delaware's four-year 26-game America East winning streak... The Terriers' 15 wins this season equal what they accomplished for wins in 1996, 1997, and 1998 combined.

Scouting the Cavaliers- Head Coach Julie Myers One of the most successful coaches in recent history, Julie Myers has taken three of her four teams to the NCAA title game and has played in the ACC title game in every year, winning the title in 1998. Myers has never had a team ranked below sixth in the national poll at any point in the season, including a final ranking atop the polls in 1998 after two consecutive seasons ranked second in the final poll. Myers enters her fifth year at Virginia as head coach with two NCAA titles, one as a player (1991) and one as an assistant coach (1993). She is only the third person in NCAA history to win a title in women's lacrosse as both a player and a coach and she is the first rookie coach to take her squad to the title game. She is also the first person to play for the championship both as a player and as a head coach.
University of Virginia-Scouting the Cavaliers The Cavaliers (12-5), ranked 6th in the country, are making their 13th appearance in the 19-year history of the Division I women's lacrosse championships... UVA is making its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAAs. Last season, the Cavaliers lost to Maryland 16-6 in the title game... The Cavaliers have a 13-10 record .565 winning percentage in the NCAA tournament... Only Maryland (16), and Penn State (15) have made more appearances in the NCAA tourney... UVA hasn't played a game since a 12-11 win over Vanderbilt on April 30th... Virginia has 11 seniors on its roster, all of whom have had NCAA tournament experience in each of their four years in Charlottesville... UVA is ranked 12th in Division I in scoring defense allowing 7.71 gpg, 18th in scoring margin, defeating teams by an average of 3.65 gpg, and 14th in winning percentage (12-5, .706)... Leading scorer for UVA is senior midfielder Jamie Haas (Berwyn, PA) with 35-19-54. Freshman midfielder Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, MD) adds 31-15-46, and senior midfielder Amy Fromal (Folsom, PA) contributes 33-11-44. Junior midfielder Mills Hook (Lutherville, MD) is UVA's other player with 30 or points as she adds 25-7-32... In goal, senior Francis Segarra (Glen Mills, PA) has 136 saves in 915.70 minutes, a .538 save percentage, and a 7.67 GAA. Her GAA ranks 11th in Division I.
Overtime B.U. is 1-1 in overtime games this season, while Virginia is 1-0. The Terriers defeated Temple, 9-8 (2OT) on March 11th, and lost 9-8 (OT) to Vanderbilt... UVA defeated Loyola, 9-8, in its only overtime game of the season.
Next Up Thursday's winner advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday, May 14th. Awaiting the winner of the B.U./Virginia game will be No. 3 James Madison. JMU is making its fifth appearance in the NCAAs, sporting a 2-4 record. Last season, JMU defeated Rutgers, 11-6 in the opening round, then lost to Duke, 11-10 in the quarterfinals. JMU has the second best offense in Division I averaging 14.8 gpg, and senior midfielder Jess Marion ranks 20th in Division I in points per game with 57-8-65 for a 4.06 ppg average. Marion also ranks 9th in the country in goals per game, averaging 3.56 gpg. Senior attack Julie Martinez scored 8 goals vs. American on April 11th. The 8 goals in a game ranks among the NCAA superlatives this season.
