Field Hockey Terriers Suffer 7-1 Defeat at Maine

Orono, Maine - Maine's Karyn Magno tallied three first-half goals and one assist, pacing the Black Bears to a 7-1 victory over Boston University at Maine's Morse Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 6). The Terriers fall despite outshooting Maine, 17-14.
Magno opened the scoring for Maine with an unassisted goal at 26:22, then added scores at 9:45 and 6:43 of the first half. The Black Bears (5-5, 4-2) held a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Maine's Kristy Ferran gave the Black Bears a 5-0 lead on a redirect off a pass by Jen Johnstone at 8:37. B. U. finally got on the board when freshman forward Meredith Long (Ocean City, NJ) beat Maine goalkeeper Jaye Lance to her left side at 20:30 to make the score 5-1. Johnstone and Tara Bedard closed out the scoring for UM late. Bedard tallied two goals for the game.
Long was a bright spot for the Terriers, taking a game-high seven shots. Junior defender Casey Holman (Bridgeton, NJ) and sophomore forward Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, MA) each took three shots.
Junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) gave up seven goals, while being credited for three saves. Lance allowed one goal and made eight saves for Maine.
The loss drops B. U.'s overall record to 4-6, and 4-2 in the conference. The Terriers travel to Hanover, NH to face Dartmouth in an out-of-conference game on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
