September 22, 2001 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team fell to conference rival Northeastern, 2-1, in overtime at Sweeney Field on Saturday (Sept. 22). The Terriers held a 1-0 advantage with less than two minutes to play, but the Huskies scored the equalizer, then the game-winner in the extra session, to take the victory.
Boston University got on the board first, when junior Jane Rogers (Watertown, MA) took a pass from senior Felicia Cappabianca (North Caldwell, NJ) and scored at 21:42 of the first half.
Despite the fact that Northeastern (5-1, 1-0) outshot B. U. 9-3 and had 12 penalty corners to B. U.'s four, the Terriers held Northeastern scoreless until the final minutes of regulation.
The Terriers held their 1-0 lead until the 1:23 mark of the second half, when the Huskies' Maureen Connelly got to a loose ball in front of the Terrier net and deflected it into the goal past junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
NU's Sarah Broderick scored the overtime game-winner at 7:32 to hand the win to the Huskies. Connelly was involved in both Northeastern goals, as she set up Broderick for the goal.
Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) made seven saves for the Terriers. NU's Kathleen Madaus picked up the win, although she did not record a save in the game.
Boston University (1-4, 1-1) returns to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 25, when it takes on new conference foe Albany at Harvard's Jordan Field. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
