McClay Earns America East Rookie Of The Week Award
October 28, 2002 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - Boston University midfielder Colleen McClay (Mahopac, N. Y.) earned the America East Conference's Rookie of the Week award for the week ending Oct. 27 after tallying one assist and serving as a key component to a Terrier offensive attack that scored 11 goals in three games.
The Terriers, ranked 16th in last week's STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, defeated Connecticut, 5-3, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in dramatic fashion, scoring two goals in the final 2:37. McClay assisted on a first-half goal by junior forward Lindsey Domers (Voorhees, N. J.) that gave B. U. its first lead of the game at 2-1. Later in the week, the Terriers split a pair of America East games, falling, 2-1 after a strokeoff, at Vermont on Friday, Oct. 25, and winning at Albany, 5-0, on Sunday, Oct. 27. Both games were played on grass fields.
In addition to lending a hand in Domers' goal, McClay continued her strong overall play at the midfield position. McClay, who has started each of the Terriers' 18 games this season, was an important factor in the team's scoring outburst last week. Her passing and elimination skills proved vital to the Terriers' ability to start their offensive attack, an attack that tallied five goals in two of the three games during the week.
McClay becomes the third freshman to garner America East Rookie of the Week honors this season. Forward Natalie DiSabato (New Albany, Ohio) and forward Caitlyn Cassara (North Caldwell, N. J.) each won the award earlier in the year.
Boston University (11-7, 2-2 America East) wraps up its regular season with a pair of home games. The Terriers host non-conference foe Harvard on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m., and America East rival Northeastern on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. Both games are at MIT's Jack Barry Field.
If the Terriers defeat Northeastern, they will earn the second seed in the 2002 America East Championship, to be held on Nov. 8 and 10 at the home site of the highest seed.
