The B.U. women's lacrosse team opened its competitive fall schedule last Sunday (Oct.7) at the Metro Lacrosse Annual Teapot Tournament in Dorchester.
The Terriers scrimmaged against regional rivals Boston College, UMass/Amhearst, New Hampshire, and Harvard.
"For our first weekend, it was a good start," said first-year head coach Liza Shoemaker. "Now we know what we have to work on."
B.U. was led in offensively by 2000 First Team America East All-Conference selection Erika Hergenroeder (Annapolis, MD/ Severna Park).
"Once Erika found her shot, she was on," said Shoemaker. "She was by far the leading scorer on the day."
Shoemaker said she was pleased with the team's overall performance despite starters Caroline Kelleher (Duxbury, MA/Governor Dummer), Katie Nordoff (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron), Liz Eberhart (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron), and Meghan Murphy (Annapolis, MD/South River) being sidelined for the day with injuries.
"Our biggest challenge is filling in with all these injuries," said Shoemaker. "People were out of position, but they still managed to play well.
"I was happy with Bri Smith (Huntington, NY/Huntington) and Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH/Kimball Union Academy). They showed up and really came to play.
"Kristin [Abruzzese] (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee) really showed leadership on the field, especially with her communication."
Defensively, the Terriers were anchored by senior Gabby Juocys (Rochester, MI/ Sacred Heart), a 2000 Third Team All-American, and senior goalie Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD/ John Carroll), a 2000 First Team All-Conference selection.
"We saw good performances from all three goalkeepers," said Shoemaker on Barrett, sophomore Lauren Beatty (Plainview, NY/Bethpage), and rookie Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD / Roland Park).
The Terriers will be in action next this Saturday (October 13th) at the 2001 Wildcat Fall Classic.
