Bears Defense Quiets Terriers, 9-7
April 24, 2002 | Women's Lacrosse

BOSTON - The Brown defense held the B.U. women's lacrosse team scoreless for over 26 minutes midway through the game and received three goals from Katie Russell in a 9-7 win on Wednesday afternoon (April 24) at Nickerson Field.
Kelly Trahon (Needham, MA) led the Terriers with two goals and a game-high three assists.
The Terriers (5-10) outshot the Bears, 32-29, and had a 10-7 advantage in caused turnovers. Niki Caggiano made 22 saves in the cage for Brown. Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD) had a strong outing for the Terriers, making 14 saves. Four of the nine goals scored on Barrett were by way of free position shots.
Ericka Hergenroeder (Annapolis, MD) put B.U. up 1-0 at 27:14, scoring off a feed from Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH). Katie Zabel assisted Russell on her first score at 24:51 and Bekah Rottenberg converted on a free position shot as Brown (5-9) took a 2-1 advantage at 21:17.
After a scrum for the next draw, Trahon raced down the left side of the field and fed Katie Nordhoff (Ellicott City, MD) rolling from behind the left side of the crease. Nordhoff placed the ball in the top right corner of the cage to tie to game at 2-2 at 19:49.
Liza Cochran and Jocelyn Moore scored back-to-back goals to give Brown a 4-2 lead at 15:45. Pushing a fast break and forcing a Brown defender to commit, Hergenroeder dished to an open Nordhoff on the crease, cutting the lead to 4-3 at 14:50. Trahon scored off a free position to knot the game at 12:01.
The Terriers would suffer through their 26-minute scoring drought, and the Bears took a 7-4 advantage off scores from Rottenberg, Russell and Sarah Passano.
B.U. would not tally its fifth goal until Trahon picked up a rebound and ripped a shot past the hip of Caggiano at 14:10 of the second half.
Christine Anneberg scored to give Brown an 8-5 cushion at 12:32. Hannah Cross (Concord, MA) provided a lift off the bench for B.U., scoring off a feed from Trahon at 8:39 and relieving Hergenroeder on the draw.
Hergenroeder cut inside the 8-meter and Trahon dished her third assist of the game to narrow the deficit to 8-7 at 7:26. But the Terriers would go scoreless for the remainder of the half and a third goal from Russell at 6:35 sealed the Bears win.
The Terriers host Vermont on Friday in the final conference regular-season game. A win would secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming America East Tournament.
