No. 1 Terps Outlast Terriers To Claim Terrapin Invitational Title
September 15, 2002 | Field Hockey
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland Terrapins got an overtime goal from sophomore forward Colleen Barbieri in the first minute of overtime as the Terrapins outlasted the Boston University field hockey team, 1-0, in the championship game of the 2002 Terrapin Field Hockey Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 15.
B. U. (3-3) did everything possible to make it difficult for the Terps to score, playing five and six defenders in Maryland's shooting circle for the majority of regulation. Maryland managed to put together a 19-0 shot advantage, and had one apparent goal whistled off in each half, but did not net the game-winner until overtime.
The Terriers did not record a shot for the second time in three games. Boston College had a 10-0 advantage in shots in a 1-0 victory over B. U. on Sept. 11. Maryland (6-0) also shut out the Terriers in penalty corners. The Terps had 12 corners.
Barbieri's closed out a persistent Maryland effort 58 seconds into the overtime, finishing a forward pass from senior Izzy Palmer with a chip shot into the right side of the cage. The Terps have won all six Terrapin Invitationals since the event's inception in 1996.
B. U. senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) allowed one goal while making seven saves.
In the Invitational's consolation game, American University downed the University of Massachusetts, 2-0.
B. U. returns home for a game against Dartmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The game, to be played at MIT's Jack Barry Field, is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
