Terrier Defense Stifles Huskies, 11-4

BOSTON - Sophomore goalkeeper Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) made 10 saves as a dominating defense led the Boston University women's lacrosse team to an 11-4 victory over visiting University of Connecticut at Nickerson Field on Wednesday, April 16.
Freshman attacker Mary Beth Miller (Berlin, NJ) paced the attack with four goals and one assist as the Terriers (8-4, 2-0) extended their current win streak to six games. UConn falls to 5-6 overall with the loss.
Leading 5-3 at the half, the Terriers took control in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 6-1 while dominating time of possession.
Junior midfielder Kylie Wagenet (Ithaca, NY) and freshman attacker Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) each tallied two goals while junior defender Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH) scored her first of two goals in the game as the Terriers took the lead at the break.
Heather Levins, Abbey Van Deusen, and Karianne Lauri each had single-goal efforts for the Huskies in the first half.
Miller scored her first goal of the game off a feed from sophomore midfielder Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT) to extend the B.U.'s lead to 6-3 at 28:50 of the second half.
Bonnie Wehinger closed the gap for the Huskies, picking up a loose ball off a block by Sheridan and scoring at 24:08.
Miller rolled the crease and scored off another feed from Trudel to spark the Terriers 5-0 scoring spree at 18:26. Miller scored two more goals while Lewis registered her third goal and Lang netted her second goal to close out the scoring.
Defensively, the Terriers were anchored by standout performances from senior Briana Smith (Huntington, NY), Lang, Trudel, and Sheridan. Smith had three ground balls and one caused turnover while slowing down the UConn fast break. Lang had a game-high four caused turnovers while Trudel had three caused turnovers to go along with her game-high three assists. Sheridan had three ground balls and two caused turnovers while making 10 stops.
April Pollack made eight saves while allowing nine goals in 50:05 of action. Jen Wong relieved Pollack for the final 9:55, making two saves on four shots.
B.U. outshot UConn, 36-18, and held the advantage in ground balls (29-19), caused turnovers (15-5), and draw controls (9-8).
The Terriers will battle for sole possession of first place in the America East standings when they play at Stony Brook (7-4, 2-0) on Friday, April 18, at 3:00 p.m.
