Eagles Win Double-Overtime Battle Over Terriers, 1-0
September 10, 2003 | Field Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Field hockey rivals Boston College and Boston University battled for over 98 minutes, with BC sophomore Bronwen Kelly scoring the lone goal of the game with 1:52 left in double overtime to give the Eagles a hard-earned 1-0 non-conference win over the Terriers at Jack Barry Field on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
With a stroke off looming, Kelly took the ball at the left of the Terrier cage and batted it into the opposite corner of the B. U. cage to secure the game-winning goal after 98:08 of play. Both teams had multiple scoring chances in the contest, with both goalkeepers making numerous big-time saves late in the game.
In the first overtime, B. U. redshirt freshman Erin Prediger (Telford, Pa. / Souderton Area) made a game-saving save with her left pad, stopping a point-blank shot by the Eagles' junior Kerri Doherty with 3:20 left in the first overtime period. Less than a minute later, she made another equally impressive save, this time off a shot by senior Virginia Drozd.
Both goalkeepers made vital plays in the second overtime as well, with BC sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Savoy stuffing the Terriers' senior forward Celeste Hubbard (Detroit, Mich. / University Liggett) before a shot could be taken, and Prediger making a similar stop at the other end.
"Erin Prediger was outstanding," said Terrier head coach Sally Starr. "We had our scoring opportunities, but their goalie came up big as well."
Boston College (3-2), ranked No. 20 in this week's STX/NFHCA National Coaches Poll, took 21 shots in the game, including 10 in the two overtime periods. B. U. (2-1), ranked 17th in the poll, was credited with 13 shots.
Seven of Prediger's 10 saves came in the overtime periods, while Savoy made five of her eight stops in the first half for BC. Drozd led the Eagles with six shots, while Hubbard took a team-high five shots for B. U.
The Terriers host the University of Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at Jack Barry Field.
