Bulldogs Trip Up Terriers, 12-7

BOSTON - Katie Sargent and Miles Whitman tallied a combined 13 points to lead the Yale women's lacrosse team to a 12-7 win over host Boston University at Nickerson Field on Wednesday, March 24.
Sargent scored a game-high five goals and added an assist while Whitman had two scores and five assists for the Bulldogs (4-2).
Junior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) kept the Terriers (2-3) within reach for the majority of the game, totaling a game- and season-high 13 saves. Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) led the Terriers in scoring with two goals and an assist.
The two teams, who entered the game knotted at 15th in the nation in the latest IWLCA Poll, battled for momentum in the opening minutes of play. Goals from Sarah Discoll and Sargent gave Yale an early 2-0 lead just 1:42 into the game. B.U. answered with a three-goal run with scores from sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Cuneo (Marlton, NJ), junior attacker Kelly Trahon (Needham, MA), and Lewis as the Terriers took a 3-2 lead at 20:05.
The Bulldogs tallied five consecutive goals to hedge a 7-3 advantage with 8:57 remaining in the first half.
Looking to make a run before the break, sophomore midfielder Danica Strutt (Pheonix, MD) converted a free position shot and senior defender Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH) scored on fast break to close the gap to 7-5 at halftime.
Lewis scored off a drive through the eight-meter to narrow the deficit to 7-6 at 27:34 but the Bulldogs answered as Whitman fed Sargent for a score at 22:11.
Off a free position, Lewis dished down low to sophomore attacker Mary Beth Miller (Berlin, NJ), who netted the Terriers' final goal of the game at 21:37.
Yale would score four unanswered goals in the final 17 minutes of play to improve to 8-0 all-time against the Terriers.
Lonnie Sarnell made five saves to pick up the win for the Bulldogs.
In addition to her 13 saves, Sheridan also had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Yale had a commanding 32-16 advantage in shots as B.U. was held to just five shots in the second half. The Terriers won the battle at the center draw, controlling 12-of-21 draws in the game. Lewis had a team-high four draw controls.
The Terriers host George Mason University on Saturday, March 27, at 12:00 p.m.
