BOSTON - George Mason goalkeeper Meg Dentler made a game- and career-high 24 saves to lead the Patriots to a 10-8 victory over 15th-ranked Boston University at Nickerson Field on Saturday, March 27.
Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) paced the Terrier attack, scoring a game- and career-high six goals.
The Patriots (2-2) jumped on the board early as Jeannine Ohler, Lisa Hagan, and Stacy Berger each had tallied goals to give GMU a 3-0 lead at 23:12. B.U. (2-4) answered with a pair of goals from Lewis and a score from senior attacker Kylie Wagenet (Ithaca, NY), knotting the game, 3-3, at 14:54.
GMU scored three unanswered goals to close out the first half and a take a 6-3 lead at the break.
Lewis, who extended her program-record goal scoring streak to 21 games, scored her third goal of the game off a feed from junior midfielder Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT) at 24:22 in the second half.
Lewis drove through the eight-meter and fired a rocket into the top right corner of the cage to bring the Terriers within one at 24:22. On the next Terrier possession, Lewis drove past a trio of GMU defenders to tie the score at 6-6 with 20:18 remaining in the game.
Olhner scored a pair of goals and Berger found the back of the net during a fast break as GMU used a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead with 10:37 remaining in the game.
Lewis grabbed a loose ball in front of the GMU crease and netted her sixth and final goal of the game at 9:47.
Tracy Waterson gave the Patriots a 10-7 lead, scoring with just 4:17 left in the game.
Trudel tallied a goal with one minute remaining in the game but B.U. would get no closer as the Patriots used a stall to run out the clock.
B.U. out-shot GMU, 43-24, but could not get the ball past Dentler. The GMU goalkeeper made 15 of her 24 saves in the second half to secure the victory. Junior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) stopped nine shots for the Terriers.
The Terriers held the advantage at the draw, 12-8, in ground balls, 27-15, and forced eight of GMU's 16 turnovers. Lewis had a game-high four draw controls and four ground balls. Senior defender Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH) and junior attacker Kelly Trahon (Needham, MA) each had four ground balls. Michele Brady led the Patriots with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
B.U. will look to end its four-game skid when it takes on cross-town rival Boston College in Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m.
