CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston University broke open a tie game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and held on for a 5-3 win in the second game of a softball doubleheader at Boston College on Sunday, March 28. The Eagles won the first game, 3-1. B. U.'s record moved to 12-19, while BC went to 18-11.
GAME ONE - Boston College 3, Boston University 1
The Terriers were the first to break into the scoring column as junior right fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) singled in junior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0 B.U.
The Terriers were right back at it in the second frame, loading the bases after a two-out walk to senior center fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, Texas). BC pitcher Tekae Malandris induced a groundball out to escape any harm.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Eagles' bats finally got to Terrier freshman pitcher Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.). The Eagles' Jenna Macchi led off the inning with her first home run of the season, a shot to right-center that tied the score at 1-1. Freeman then issued two walks on eight pitches. Consecutive RBI singles by Lisa Field and Ashley Obrest scored two more runs, allowing the Eagles to take a 3-1 lead.
Malandris improved to 6-3 on the season. She allowed only one Terrier hit in the final four innings, and no runs in the final six Terrier frames. Williams went 2-for-2 with an RBI for B.U. Macchi was the only Eagle with more than one hit. She went 2-for-3 with a single and a home run.
GAME TWO - Boston University 5, Boston College 3
Both teams scored single runs in the fourth inning. B.U.'s came on a Michelle Daly wild pitch that allowed Williams to score from third. BC's came on a Daly RBI double that scored Erin Mackey.
The game would remain tied until the seventh and final inning. That's when Haas ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line that would score two Terrier runs (Freeman and Pauley) and give B.U. a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore first baseman Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) followed with a line drive down the right field line that scored Haas to increase the lead to 4-1. Sophomore designated player Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.) put a bow on the Terriers' four-run inning with an RBI single up the middle to score freshman pinch runner Heather Cassidy (Plainville, Mass.).
BC wasn't finished despite trailing 5-1. The Terriers replaced Williams with Freeman in the circle, and the Eagles took advantage of the change. Leadoff hitter Kimmy Hopkins homered to right center to slash the B.U. lead to 5-2. A walk, single, and fielder's choice later, BC had runners on the corners with one out. After an Elena Ferrero strikeout, Mackey singled to center to score one run and make the score 5-3, but Elyse Meredith popped to short to end the rally and the game.
Haas went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Terriers. In the circle, Williams (2-4) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. She struck out one and walked three. For BC, Daly was the only Eagle with more than one hit. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the circle, Daly (3-2) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up all five earned runs on eight hits. She struck out five and walked three.
B.U. returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 when its hosts Quinnipiac for a doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m. www.bu.edu/athletics
