Eagles Battle Past Rival Terriers, 7-5
March 31, 2004 | Women's Lacrosse
Chestnut Hill, MA - Despite heavy rain and wind, Boston College picked up 7-5 non-conference win over cross-town rival Boston University at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday, March 31.
Susie Breaznell and Meggie O'Neill each scored a pair of goals as the Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Five different Terriers tallied one goal as B.U. dropped its fifth consecutive game, falling to 2-5 overall.
The Eagles, who had not defeated the Terriers since the 1997 season, opened the game with an unassisted goal from Courtney Legath at 25:22. B.U. evened the score as sophomore midfielder Keely Anderson (Nashua, NH) found the back of the net at 20:48. Elizabeth Kadison scored at 13:23 as B.C. took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Goals from Breaznell and O'Neil extended B.C.'s lead to 4-1 just 3:44 into the second half. Sophomore midfielders Danica Strutt (Pheonix, MD) and Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) closed the gap to 4-3 at 23:28.
But just as B.U. crept back into the game, Carley St. Lucia quieted the Terrier rally, scoring at 22:35 to push the lead to 5-3.
Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Cuneo (Marlton, NJ) brought the Terriers within one again, scoring off a free position shot at 19:15.
Breaznell tallied her second goal of the game as B.C. hung to a 6-4 lead with 17:28 remaining.
Despite numerous free position chances, B.U. would not convert another goal until junior midfielder Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT) scored off an eight-meter shot with 6:01 on the clock.
O'Neill would silence any chance of a Terrier comeback, scoring off a free position with 3:18 left to play.
B.U. out-shot B.C., 22-18, but was just 3-of-11 in free position chances. Uncharacteristically, B.U. did not register an assist in the game. The Terriers entered the game with 24 assists in their first six games.
Eagles goalkeeper Michelle Lawton stopped nine shots to earn the win.
For the Terriers, junior Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) made six saves in the losing effort.
B.U. opens its 2004 America East schedule when it hosts Vermont on Saturday, April 3, at 12:00 p.m.
