Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's Margaret Blair scored the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Seawolves a 3-2 America East softball victory over Boston University on Sunday, April 25 at University Field.
The Terriers fell to 19-27 overall and 7-4 in America East. The Seawolves improved to 22-26 and 8-4 and move past the Terriers into second place in America East.
Blair led off the eighth with a double to right center and moved to third on a bunt single by Marissa Servello. Laura Bradford followed with a fly ball to shallow right field and it caromed off the glove of freshman right fielder Brittany Detwiler's (Souderton, Pa.), allowing Blair to score the winning run.
Blair opened the scoring when she hit a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the third to give SB a 1-0 lead.
B.U. tied it at one in the top of the fifth when sophomore catcher Josey Mendez (Miami, Fla.) laid down a squeeze bunt that plated sophomore pinch runner Tara Hodge (Los Gatos, Calif.). The Terriers had the chance to do some more damage with one out in the inning, but Sarah Hoffman threw freshman pinch runner Erika Myrill (Baldwin, N.Y.) out at home on a fielder's choice and Angela Andrews struck out sophomore first baseman Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) to end the inning.
After a solo home run to left center by junior left fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Kristen Brust smashed a shot of her own to right to tie the game up at two runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh.
Ashlee Freeman (12-13) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over seven innings. Williams went 2-for-4 to lead B.U.
Angela Andrews (14-17) picked up the victory, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out a season-high seven batters in eight innings of work.
Blair led the Seawolves at the plate with a 2-for-3 afternoon to go with two runs and an RBI.
The Terriers continue play in America East with a doubleheader at the University of Maine on Wednesday, April 28.
