BOSTON - Boston University won the first game of an America East softball doubleheader against the University of Hartford, 4-0, at the B.U. Softball Field on Saturday, May 1. The Hawks came back to take game two, 5-4, despite a late comeback effort by the Terriers.
Freshman pitcher Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) was stellar in the circle for B.U., scattering three hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters in the game-one win. She improved to 14-13 with the win.
Senior center fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, Texas) was an offensive catalyst all day, going a combined 5-for-7 from the plate with a triple. Junior left fielder DeKenya Williams was equally as effective, batting a combined 4-for-5 with a triple.
B.U.'s overall record moves to 21-29, 9-6 in America East play. Hartford goes to 11-19, 6-8. Entering today's games, the Terriers had shutout the Hawks 11 times in the last 14 meetings and had outscored them, 57-8, in those 14 games.
GAME ONE - Boston University 4, Hartford 0
B.U. shutout the Hawks for the 12th time in its last 15 games against Hartford, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead after Pauley scored an unearned run thanks to a Hartford throwing error.B.U. added to the lead in the third, as sophomore first baseman Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) hit a solo home run to right center, her team-leading 11th homer of the season, to make it 2-0.
The lead would grow to 3-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by junior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas), and then 4-0 on another unearned run in the sixth.
Hartford's Jamie Graves (4-8) took the loss. She gave up a pair of earned runs and eight hits.
GAME TWO - Hartford 5, Boston University 4
Freshman pitcher Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) had her stuff in the circle to start game two, retiring nine of the first 11 batters she faced and not giving up a hit in the first three innings. It was in the fourth that the Hartford batters finally got to her, as the Hawks scored three times on three hits and two defensive errors - one of them by Detwiler.
The Hawks' Liz Borawski opened the scoring when she crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Sammie Morrison then drove in Nikki Thompson for the second run, and later was driven in on a Ryan Williams' single.
B.U. retaliated with a single run in the fifth after Pauley led off the inning with a triple. Haas drove her in on the sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Hartford would score what ultimately turned out to be the game's deciding runs in the top of the sixth, the first of which coming on a controversial play in which Hartford argued successfully that a one-base throwing error should have been a two-base error that allowed a run to score and extend the Hawks' lead to 4-1. Michelle Mariano would then come up with a run-scoring double to left center to make it 5-1.
Harford starting pitcher Nicole McMillon showed some signs of fatigue in the bottom of the sixth, walking a pair of B.U. batters and giving up a single to Pauley that led to another unearned run after the Harford shortstop was charged with obstructing the runner. Haas would add to the inning with an RBI single through the left side to pull the Terriers to within 5-3 with only the seventh inning remaining.
B.U. managed to cut the lead to 5-4 in the seventh on a Detwiler fielder's choice, but couldn't score the game-tying run.
B.U. closes out its home schedule on Senior Day on Sunday, May 2 when it hosts Hartford for a single game at noon.
