BOSTON - Boston University's leading scorer Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) was named Most Valuable Player at the team's annual post-season banquet on Wednesday, May 13.
Freshman defenders Noelle Hopper (Ellicott City, MD) and Alex Mount (Northport, MA) both received the Most Improved Player award.
Lewis led the Terriers in nearly every statistical category during the 2004 season. The sophomore midfielder led the team and ranked fifth in America East in scoring with 50 goals and 16 assists for 66 total points. Her 50 goals rank as the second-highest single-season goal total in program history behind Chris Fleming's 62 goals in 1984. Lewis also led the team in draw controls (45), ground balls (42), and game-winning goals (3).
With goals in all 19 games in 2004, Lewis extended her program-record goal-scoring streak to 34 games. She had 17 multiple-point games, including a six-goal effort in the Terriers' 12-10 win over UMBC in the America East semifinals on May 6. Lewis was selected to the America East All-Tournament Team and the All-Conference Second Team.
Hopper and Mount share the Most Improved Player award after two impressive freshman campaigns.
As injuries depleted the Terrier roster, Hopper was moved from the defense to the attack where she saw significant action as both a starter and a reserve. She appeared in 14 games, earning six starts while compiling six goals and two assists. On the defensive end, Hopper collected 12 ground balls, nine draw controls, and six caused turnovers. She started both games at the America East Championship where she contributed two goals off two shots.
Mount appeared in four games during her freshman campaign, but head coach Liza Shoemaker said it was her efforts in practice that allowed her to improve dramatically.
"Alex worked extremely hard on her stick work and her defensive game," said Shoemaker. "She became someone we could count on in practice and to be a spark off the bench in games."
In addition to the awards, Shoemaker also announced that rising seniors Karlene Lihota (Marple Newtown, PA), Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD), Kelly Trahon (Needham, MA), and Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT) will captain the team next season. Trahon and Trudel served as tri-captains along with senior Liz Eberhart (Ellicott City, MD) during the 2004 season.
The Terriers will return 19 letterwinners and 11-of-12 starters for the 2005 season. B.U. posted a 9-10 overall record in 2004 and reached the America East Championship game for the sixth consecutive season.
