Shute's First Career Goal Lifts Terriers Over UMass
September 15, 2004 | Field Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Sarah Shute (LIncolnville, Maine) took a pass from senior Jen Joyce (Lititz, Pa) on a breakaway and scored the only goal of the game with 16:46 left in regulation to give the Boston University field hockey team a 1-0 win at the University of Massachusetts on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
B.U. (2-3) dominated play for much of the first half, outshooting UMass (0-6), 9-1. The Terriers were unable to put a shot past Minutewomen goalkeeper Christine Tocco. Less than five minutes into the game, the Terriers had a sequence of three straight penalty corners that resulted in three unsuccessful shots.
Ten minutes into the second half, UMass put increased pressure on the Terriers' defense, but sophomore goalkeeper Erin Prediger (Telford, Pa.), as she has done all season, made a number of saves to keep the Minutewomen off the scoreboard.
Midway through the half, the Terriers got all the offense they would need, as Joyce and Shute both came on the attack after receiving the ball off a UMass turnover. Tocco came out of the cage in an attempt to cut down the angle, but Joyce slipped the ball past Tocco and Shute was able to score the eventual game-winner.
UMass had one last chance to tie the score with 2:50 to go, but Caitlin Beresin's shot deflected off the post.
B.U. held advantages in both shots (17-9) and penalty corners (10-3). Prediger made three saves, all in the second half, while Tocco was forced to make eight stops.
With the shutout, the team's first of the season, Prediger improved her goals against average to a slim 1.67.
Terrier senior Kara Rossi (North Salem, N.Y.) took a game-high five shots. Shute and senior Lauren Vendetti (Ashland, Mass.) were both credited with three shots.
After playing their last four games on the road, the Terriers return home to host Brown University at MIT's Jack Barry Field on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
