September 18, 2004 | Field Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Playing in a driving rain, the Boston University field hockey team defeated visiting Brown University, 3-1, at Jack Barry Field on Saturday, Sept. 18. Brown scored the first goal of the game off a penalty stroke, but the Terriers responded with the next three scores.
Boston University improves to 3-3 with the win, while Brown falls to 1-4.
The Terriers jumped on the attack from the very beginning, putting a flurry of shots on goal and forcing Brown's freshman goalkeeper Kristen Hodavance to make nine first half saves on 14 Boston University shots.
It was the Bears that took advantage of the Terriers aggressive play. With 18 minutes on the first-half clock, the visitors drew a penalty for tackling from behind in front of the Terriers' cage. Brown junior Kristin Vincent made good on the ensuing penalty stroke, blasting it past the Terriers' sophomore goalkeeper Erin Prediger (Telford, Pa.) and into the top right corner of the cage to give Brown a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers evened the score with just under five minutes to go in the first half when freshman Pam Speuhler (Sudbury, Mass.) tipped the ball into the cage after an unsuccessful penalty corner. It was her first career goal. The teams went into the intermission tied at 1-1.
Terrier sophomore Ashley Parker (Cheshire, Conn.) scored the eventual game-winner, her first career goal, off a penalty corner on a blast from the top of the circle that gave the home team a 2-1 advantage with 15:56 remaining. It was the first direct penalty corner goal for B.U. in 26 games dating back to late in the 2002 season.
B.U. added an insurance goal six minutes later as senior Jen Joyce (Lititz, Pa.), positioned at the far post, knocked the ball in off a rebound to make the score 3-1 with 10:36 to play.
Senior Lauren Vendetti (Ashland, Mass.) led all players with seven shots. Shute was next with five. Prediger made six saves, while her counterpart, Hodavance, made 10.
The Terriers open America East play when they travel to Middlebury, Vt. On Wednesday, Sept. 22 to take on the University of Vermont at Middlebury College. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Terriers then return home to face Dartmouth College at MIT's Jack Barry Field on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
