October 31, 2005 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - Sophomore Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass.) was named America East Co-Player of the Week on Monday, while freshman Lauren Alfaro (Linwood, N.J.) earned Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced by the conference office. Spuehler, Alfaro and the rest of the 18th-ranked BU field hockey squad closed out the regular season with wins over Harvard and Maine. The team is set to host the America East Championships on Nov. 4-5 after claiming the regular season championship for the second consecutive year.
Spuehler, who has tallied at least one point in four of BU's last five contests, scored the game winner in overtime at Harvard when she collected a lead pass from junior Erin Calamari (Chester, Conn.) and outraced the Crimson defenders before beating the goalkeeper with a push inside the near post on the right side.
In Sunday's 3-1 victory at Maine, Spuehler helped the Terriers seal the top seed and home-field advantage for the America East tournament by setting up the team's second goal of the afternoon. The sophomore dribbled through the Maine defenders on the right side before entering the circle and sending a perfect pass to classmate Sarah Shute (Lincolnville, Maine), who tipped the ball to the boards while she positioned by the near post.
In addition to the America East weekly accolade, Spuehler also earned a spot on the www.womensfieldhockey.com Division I national honor roll for her efforts.
Spuehler finished the regular season with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
Alfaro, who scored three of her four goals this season during conference play, came up with a big insurance tally in the closing minutes of the first half against the Black Bears. The freshman tipped in a nice entry pass from senior Colleen McClay (Mahopac, N.Y.) to give the visitors a 3-0 lead with 1:25 left before intermission. She becomes the second Terrier to earn Rookie of the Week honors this year, joining classmate Holly Wiles (Harare, Zimbabwe).
