Field Hockey to Face Michigan in NCAA First Round
November 8, 2005 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - After earning an automatic NCAA tournament bid by virtue of its 5-3 victory over Central Michigan in Tuesday's play-in game, the 17th-ranked Boston University field hockey team was paired up against No. 7 Michigan in the 16-team bracket, which was announced Tuesday evening. The first-round game will take place at Ohio State on Saturday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m. The winner of the BU/Michigan contest will advance to Sunday's quarterfinal against the winner of the Ohio State/Old Dominion game.
The Terriers will be making their eighth appearance in the NCAA tournament and their first since 2000. Michigan, who was the last team other than Wake Forest to win the national title (2001), earned a spot in the 2005 tournament after claiming the Big Ten tournament title with a 3-0 blanking of Indiana on Sunday.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools and the first since 2002, when the Wolverines posted a 3-0 home victory. Each team has won two games in the series and the teams met three consecutive seasons from 1986-1988. In 1986, The Terriers pulled out a 1-0 double-overtime victory at home before being edged 2-1 on the road the following year. BU's last win in the series came via a 3-0 shutout in 1988 in a neutral-site contest played at Springfield College.
