MIAMI, FL-The Terrier women's tennis team saw its seven-match win streak come to an end on Sunday, March 13, as it dropped a 7-0 decision to host University of Miami, which was ranked ninth in the nation.
It was the final match of the Terriers' annual spring break trip to Florida, and it dropped B.U.'s overall record to 7-3. In the meantime, the Hurricanes improved to 10-2 overall as they swept their seventh match of the season.
For the Terriers, the highlight was the play of freshman Gina Sabatino, who moved up to number one singles from her normal spot at number three. The reason for the move was injuries that sidelined Laura Ahmes and Erin Katims. In fact, the Terriers had just five players for the match and the result was they had to forfeit one doubles and the number six singles matches.
Playing Miami's number one singles player, Staci Stevens, Sabatino went to three sets before losing, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. In winning the second set, Sabatino became the first Terrier to win a set against a Miami player in the years the two teams have met during B.U.'s spring break.
Miami opened the match by winning numbers one and two doubles. At number one, Melissa Applebaum and Caren Seenauth upended Sabatino and Monica Shepherd, 8-2. Then, at number two doubles, Stevens and Patricia Starzyk bested Aimee Charest and Katarina Draganova, 8-5.
In singles, Emily Mowery, ranked 70th in the country, opened things off for the Hurricanes by defeating Shepherd, 6-2, 6-0 at number three.
Seenauth and Juliette Mavroleon won their matches in straight sets at numbers four and five, respectively. Seenauth got by Draganova, 6-0, 6-2, while Mavroleon downed Cheri Lapane by the identical score of 6-0, 6-2.
At number two, Starzyk defeated Charest, 6-1, 6-2, before Stevens outlasted Sabatino at number one singles.
