April 27, 2005 | Women's Lacrosse
BOSTON - Junior attacker Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 left in regulation as the fifth-ranked Boston University women's lacrosse team defeated second-ranked Dartmouth, 10-9, on a rain-soaked Nickerson Field on Wednesday, April 27.
The B.U. victory was the first win over the Big Green (13-1, 7-0) in eight tries and the first-ever win over a team ranked in the top three in the nation.
Freshman attacker Jenny Hauser (Alexandria, VA) and Lewis each scored three goals for the Terriers (14-1, 5-0), who extended their season-long win streak to 10 games. Kristin Barry and Katieanne Christian each scored three goals to lead the Big Green.
The B.U. attack built a 7-4 lead at the half as five different Terriers found the back of the net. Hauser and Lewis each scored two goals while junior attacker Mary Beth Miller (Berlin, NJ), junior midfielder Kaitlyn Cuneo (Marlton, NJ), and freshman midfielder Lauren Morton (Glenside, PA) each had single-goal efforts.
Dartmouth answered quickly in the second half as Jen Pittman drove the eight-meter for an unassisted goal just 36 seconds after the break. Hauser converted a free position shot as B.U. pushed the lead back to 8-5 at 27:35. Barry forced a turnover and scored her second goal of the game at 26:05. Cuneo drove the right side of the eight-meter and scored to put B.U. ahead, 9-6, with 25:06 left to play.
The Big Green rallied, scoring three unanswered goals to knot the score, 9-9, with 12:22 remaining in the game. Dartmouth held possession for nearly seven minutes but senior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) made her eighth save of the game to give B.U. the ball with three minutes left to play. Looking for an open lane, Lewis drove along the left side of the eight-meter and scored the go-ahead goal at 1:39.
Dartmouth's Whitney Douthell won the ensuring draw, but senior midfielder Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT) forced a turnover in B.U.'s defensive end and the Terriers ran out the clock on the Big Green.
Trudel and Cuneo combined for seven of the Terriers' 12 caused turnovers.
Sheridan finished with eight saves, five ground balls, and one caused turnover to earn her 14th victory of the season. Dartmouth's Devon Willis made a game-high nine saves.
To close out its regular-season, B.U. will play at New Hampshire (10-6, 5-0) for the 2005 America East regular-season title and the right to host the league championship.
