Women's Tennis Loses To Tennessee In NCAAs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Terrier women's tennis team had its season come to an end on Friday, May 13, as it lost to 16th-ranked Tennessee, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, held at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center.
The loss dropped the Terriers' final record to 11-10, while the Lady Vols improved to 15-8 and will meet the host Crimson at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, with the winner advancing to the tournament's Round of 16. The final four rounds of the championships will be held May 19-22 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
For the Terriers, who qualified for the Tournament by winning the America East Championship, it marked the seventh straight year they were invited to the NCAAs and the seventh straight year they were eliminated in the first round.
In Friday's match, the Lady Vols jumped out to a 1-0 lead by clinching the doubles point. The Terriers' number three doubles team of freshman Katie Draganova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and junior Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA) jumped to a 3-1 lead over Tennessee's Daron Moore and Bryce Marable.
However, the Tennessee tandem rallied to take an 8-4 win. Sabita Maharaj and Ashley Robards clinched the point for Tennessee with an 8-5 win over juniors Laura Ahmes (East Sarasota, FL) and Cheri Lapane (Reading, MA) at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Melissa Schaub and Ghizela Schutte held a 7-5 lead over freshman Gina Sabatino (Waltham, MA) and junior Monica Shepard (Austin, TX) when play was suspended since the Lady Vols had wrapped up the doubles point.
Tennessee quickly took a 2-0 lead when Ghizela Schutte posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Charest at number five singles. Sabita Maharaj gave the Lady Vols a 3-0 cushion with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Ahmes at number one singles. Victoria Jones clinched the victory for Tennessee when she closed out a 6-2, 6-3 win over sophomore Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL) at number three singles.
With Tennessee having achieved four points, the play was suspended.
