TERRIERS ADVANCE TO NCAA QUATERFINALS Senior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan made a game-high 11 saves to lead the third-seeded B.U. women’s lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory over Colgate in a NCAA Championship first round game at Nickerson Field on Thursday, May 12. Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Cuneo led all scorers with four goals. With its’ first-ever NCAA Tournament win, B.U. advances to the quarterfinals to play sixth-seeded Virginia in Charlottesville on Sunday, May 15, at 2:00 p.m.
TERRIERS AGAINST THE CAVALIERS B.U. and Virginia have played just once, with the Cavaliers earning a 13-10 victory in the 2000 NCAA Tournament in Charlottesville on May 11. No current players remain from the 2000 squad, although the two teams do have familiar faces in the line-up. Sisters Julie and Jenny Hauser could meet for the first time in collegiate play. The two sisters were teammates at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Va. Julie is a junior midfielder for the Cavaliers and has seen action in all 19 games in 2005. Jenny, who was recently named America East Rookie of the Year, is the Terriers’ leading scorer with 54 goals and 14 assists for a team-high 68 points.
TERRIERS RIDING 14-GAME WIN STREAK B.U. extended its program-record win streak to 14 games with its win over Colgate in the NCAA First Round. The Terriers previous record of 12 consecutive wins occurred in both 1998-99 and 2003. B.U.’s last loss came in a 6-4 defeat at Yale on March 23.
TRUDEL CLOSING IN ON ALL-TIME SCORING RECORD With her three-goal effort against Colgate in the NCAA First Round, senior midfielder Alyssa Trudel raised her career scoring total to 237 points. She is six points shy of eclipsing B.U.’s all-time scoring record of 242 points set by Chrissy Lombard (‘01). Trudel is B.U.’s career leader in assists with 95. She ranks third on the career goals list with 142.
SHOEMAKER AIMS FOR 50TH CAREER WIN Head coach Liza Shoemaker picked up her 49th career win in the Terriers’ NCAA First Round game against Colgate. In her fourth season at the helm, Shoemaker has guided the Terriers to their best record (18-1) and highest win total (18) in program history. The two-time America East Coach of the Year (2003, 2005), Shoemaker was honored as the North Region Coach of the Year in 2003 and is a nominee for the National Coach of the Year award this season.
ON THE ROAD B.U. has played just six games away from Nickerson Field this season, posting a 5-1 record on the road. The Terriers picked up their first road victory with a 17-11 win over Monmouth in St. Petersburg, Fla., on March 10. B.U. dropped its only game of the season to Yale, 6-4, in New Haven on March 23. Following the loss to the Bulldogs, the Terriers rattled off four consecutive road victories to close out the regular season. In the six road games, B.U. has out-scored (73-47) and out-shot (189-140) its opponents. B.U. has also had the advantage in draw controls (69-65) and caused turnovers (54-47). Freshman attacker Jenny Hauser has led the team in scoring on the road, totaling 26 points off 20 goals and six assists. Junior attackers Mary Beth Miller (11-11--22) and Lindsay Lewis (13-3--16) have also made solid contributions. Senior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan has posted a 7.57 goals against average and a .551 save percentage in the six road games.
SHERIDAN, TRUDEL NOMINATED FOR TEWAARATON TROPHY Senior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan and senior midfielder Alyssa Trudel were among 18 nominees selected for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy which is presented to the nation’s top collegiate lacrosse player as the nominees were announced April 17. Sheridan and Trudel represent the first-ever Terriers nominated in the five-year history of the award. While guiding the Terriers to their best record in the program’s 18-year history, Sheridan ranks among the nation’s best goalkeepers. The 5-7 goalkeeper ranks second in the nation in both save percentage (.585) and goals against average (6.81) while anchoring a defensive unit that has allowed 10 or more goals just twice this season. In her career, Sheridan has made 476 saves, which ranks as the second-highest save total in program history. A two-time team captain, Trudel ranks second on B.U.’s all-time scoring list with 142 goals and 95 assists for 237 points. Trudel is B.U.’s second-leading scorer in 2005 with 42 goals and 20 assists for 62 points. A dominant player in the midfield, Trudel leads B.U. in ground balls (40) and caused turnovers (32) while ranking second in draw controls (42). The list of 18 nominees for the award will be narrowed to five finalists before the award is presented in Washington, D.C., on June 2.
TRAHON CONTINUES IMPROBABLE COMEBACK Senior attacker Kelly Trahon made her 13th appearance of the season against Colgate as one of two reserves used off the bench. Trahon was not expected to see any action this season after suffering the third knee injury of her career during a pre-season practice in February. The 5-2 attacker tore her anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee and was expected to miss her entire senior season. The injury was nothing new for Trahon, who missed the entire 2003 season with the same injury and sat out all but three games with an MCL injury in 2001. Trahon returned to action in B.U.’s 11-10 overtime win at George Mason, contributing two ground balls. She has appeared in 13 of the last 14 games, while Terriers have posted a perfect 14-0 record.
B.U. AT THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Terriers are making their third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2005. B.U. last earned a trip to the NCAA’s in 2003 as the Terriers dropped a 9-7 decision to seventh-seeded Dartmouth in Hanover in the first round on May 8. Then-freshman attacker Lindsay Lewis led the Terriers with a team-high four goals, including a free position goal to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 15:41 left to play. But Casey Hazel netted an insurance goal with 3:10 remaining to seal the victory. Then-sophomore goalkeeper Anne Sheridan made 10 saves in her first appearance in the NCAA’s. B.U. earned its first invitation to the NCAA’s in 2000, finishing the regular season with a 15-3 record to earn an at-large bid. As the America East Conference champions, the Terriers entered the tournament as the 11th seed and traveled to sixth-seeded Virginia for a first-round matchup on May 11. The Cavaliers raced out to a 5-0 lead early in the first half and extended its lead to 8-5 in the second, but the Terriers cut the deificit to 11-10 with six minutes remaining. Virginia pulled away late for a 13-10 victory.
B.U. WINS AMERICA EAST REGULAR-SEASON AND TOURNAMENT TITLES B.U. earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 16-6 victory over New Hampshire in the 2005 America East Championship title game at Nickerson Field on Saturday, May 7. The top-seeded Terriers raced out to 6-0 lead and never looked back against the second-seeded Wildcats. B.U. reached the title game after a 20-5 win over fourth-seeded UMBC in the semifinals on Thursday, May 5. Senior midfielder Alyssa Trudel was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player following her five-goal, two-assist effort in the title game. Senior goalkeeper Anne Sheridan, senior defender Karlene Lihota, and freshman midfielder Lauren Morton joined Trudel on the All-Tournament Team. B.U. earned the right to host the conference tournament after posting a perfect 6-0 record against league opponents during the regular season. The Terriers picked up their third regular-season title (2000, 2003, 2005) and fourth tournament title (2000, 2002, 2003, 2005).
HAUSER BREAKS FRESHMAN SCORING RECORD With her 68 points in 19 games this season, first-year attacker Jenny Hauser has established a new freshman scoring record. Hauser bested the previous record of 59 points set by teammate Mary Beth Miller in 2003. Hauser’s 68 points rank as the fourth-highest single-season point total in program history. Senior midfielder Alyssa Trudel set a program record with 86 points as a sophomore in 2003. Hauser’s 54 goals in 2005 are the second-highest single-season total in B.U. history. Chris Fleming set the program record with 62 goals during the 1984 season.
B.U. TO HOST 2006 NCAA FINAL FOUR B.U. will serve as host for the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship as announced by the NCAA Championship Committee on Thursday, Feb. 24. This will be the 25th anniversary of the women’s lacrosse national championship and special events commemorating the silver anniversary will be held. The semifinals and finals will be played at B.U.’s Nickerson Field on May 26 and 28, 2006. It marks the second time in the 25-year history that the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Final Four will be played at Nickerson Field. B.U. also hosted the event in 1984.
