BOSTON - Boston University head lacrosse coach Liza Shoemaker, who guided the Terriers to their most successful season in their 18-year history, has been named Inside Lacrosse Magazine Coach of the Year. In addition, senior Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) was named Goalkeeper of the Year and freshman attacker Jenny Hauser (Alexandria, VA) was named Rookie of the Year.
The Terriers, who finished the season with an overall record of 18-2 and an America East mark of 6-0, set single-season records for wins, consecutive wins (14) and home wins (13). The Terriers captured the America East regular-season and tournament titles and won their first NCAA tournament game, defeating Colgate, 12-6, in a first-round game on May 12. B.U. saw its incredible run end in a 13-9 loss to tournament runner-up Virginia on May 15. The Terriers finished the season ranked second in the nation in win percentage (.900) and scoring margin (+6.65), third in scoring offense (13.65) and scoring defense (7.0), and 18th in draw controls (12.2) and caused turnovers (10.15).
Shoemaker, who completed her fourth year as the Terrier head coach, was also honored as the America East Coach of the Year and is a candidate for IWLCA National Coach of the Year.
Sheridan anchored a stifling Terrier defense, leading the NCAA in save percentage (.573) while ranking fourth in goals against average (7.15). One of the 18 candidates for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is presented to the nation's top player, Sheridan was named to the IWLCA All-American First Team, Inside Lacrosse All-American Second Team, and All-North Region First Team.
Hauser became the first B.U. freshman in seven years to lead the team in scoring, totaling 54 goals and 16 assists for 70 points. A major factor in the midfield and off the draw, Hauser also contributed 36 ground balls, 26 draw controls, and 16 caused turnovers. She was the lone freshman named to the Inside Lacrosse All-American First Team and was an All-North Region First Team selection.
The Terriers will return nine starters and 19 letterwinners for the 2006 season.
