Terriers In Australia: Journal Entry No. 2
June 8, 2005 | Women's Lacrosse
SYDNEY, Australia - The Boston University women's lacrosse team, fresh off its best season ever, is in the middle of a 15-day training tour of Australia. The following is the second of a number of online diaries by members of the 2005 Terrier team. The entry is by senior Alyssa Trudel.
Sunday, June 5th Our adventures continue in Australia...Sunday was our big lax match - or so we thought. It really ended up being a scrimmage vs. the New South Wales team. This is their off-season and for numerous reasons, they couldn't field a complete team. Their team apparently did really well at their last National Tourney outing, placing second overall. Anne didn't make a field appearance but Jenna did and so did Liza, can you say glory days?! We split up upperclassmen and Liza vs. underclassmen and the Aussies. It was a extreme 10 aside battle but, obviously, the upperclassmen finished triumphant! It was quite the funny experience though, playing with permanent boundaries and the restraining line at the 50. We also played that you could move on the whistle which was interesting but it kinda kills the concept of midfield play, which clearly isnt a good rule cause midfielders rule!
One highlight that need be mentioned might be the look on Liza's face after one of the Australian players (originally from Japan) decided to whip a no look shovel shot in the direction of Liza's head. It missed the cage by a good 5 ft but I don't think that girl knew who she was messing with. No blood spilled but as us girls have learned, the shovel shot doesn't even exist in Liza's version of lax. After the game we had a nice BBQ and chatted with the Aussie women. We had that afternoon free for small adventures and shopping around the city... Monday, June 6th We traveled over the Sydney Olympic Center which was amazing. Lots of interesting buildings and architecture - one highlight was definitely checking out their main rugby/cricket/soccer stadium which can be changed from a circular shape to a rectangle to get the fans closer to the action depending on the sport being played. It takes 50 workers 8 hrs to pull out these patches of grass and expose some tracks that the bleachers just slide on.
Tuesday, June 7th
We departed our hotel in the morning and flew to the Gold Coast. We're staying in Surfers Paradise, a beach touristy town. The weather has been gorgeous - rough when your winter is about 75 degrees on the coast with a nice breeze and blue skies. The entire team headed to the beach today bright and early. I think Keely ran into my room at about 8am to wake Mary and I up to get going - never seen her motivate quite so quick. Most people spent the day walking around or laying in the sun, enjoying the collection of shops and eateries.
Back to the Beach, Alyssa
